M.B.B.S. COURSE

The MBBS course was started at North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences offers the MBBS course from the session 2008 with and annual intake of 50 seats. The MBBS course is of the duration of 4 years and 6 months as per Academic Calendar of Medical Council of India (MCI), followed by 1 year compulsory rotating internship programe. The course is under affiliation of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong and recognized by Medical Council of India. The MBBS programe commences from the month of August.


M.D. / M.S. COURSE

The Post Graduate (MD/MS) Courses were started from the session 2009-10. Presently MD / MS courses in NEIGRIHMS are offered in eight specialties - Anaesthesiology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology Microbiology, Pathology, Radiodiagnosis, Gen Surgery, Anatomy and Gen Medicine. The duration of the courses are of 3 years. The candidate joining M.D. / M.S. degree course is called Junior Resident (PG). The academic session commences in the month of May of the Academic Year.

D.M. / M.CH. COURSE

The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences offers the Super Specialty (Post doctoral) course Doctor of Medicine(DM) in Cardiology from the session 2012-2013 under affiliation of North Eastern Hill University. The number of seats currently offered is as follows

B.SC. NURSING COURSE

The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences offers the B.Sc Nursing Course. The B.Sc. Nursing is a Baccalaureate Degree Programme of four (4) years, leading to the award of a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The programme is designed to help the graduates acquire a broad based knowledge and to become highly competent professionals who can function as skilled practitioners in different hospital and community settings. They should be able to manage different types of health programmes and be a team leader of Health Care Workers.

Duration of the Course:
Four years including six months Internship Programme as per the academic calendar of Indian Nursing Council.

ADMISSION INFORMATION

M.B.B.S. COURSE

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

  • Nationality: Applicant must be a Resident Indian National and Permanent Resident/Domicile of one of the 8 (eight) Northeastern states of India including Sikkim.
  • The Applicant should have studied and completed their course in the schools located in India in the preceding two years.
  • He/She has completed age of 17 years at the time of admission or will complete the age on or before 31st December of the year of his/her admission to the 1st year M.B.B.S.
  • The applicant should have passed the qualifying examinations in the manner mentioned below:
    • The Higher / Senior Secondary Examination or the Indian School Certificate Examination which is equivalent to 10+2 Higher / Senior Secondary Examination after a period of 12 years study, the last two years of such study comprising Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany and Zoology) (which shall include practical tests in these subjects) and with English at a level not less than the core course for English as prescribed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training after introduction of the 10+2+3 educational structure as recommended by the National Committee on Education.
    • The applicant must have passed in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology (or Botany and Zoology) and English individually and must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks taken together in Physics, Chemistry, Biology / Botany & Zoology at the qualifying examination.

METHOD OF SELECTION:

  • A competitive Entrance examination is usually held during the month of July for filling up of 18 (eighteen) NE open category seats.
  • All candidates securing less than 50% marks in aggregate in the subject of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English taken together in the Entrance Examination will not be considered for admission to the Institute and their names will not be included in the Merit List.
  • A combined merit list of all the candidates will be drawn on the basis of their performance in the Entrance Examination.
  • Inter se merit: In the case of two or more candidates securing equal marks in the Entrance Examination their inter-se merit shall be determined from the marks of the Entrance Examination as follows:
    • Eliminating first English marks.
    • If there is still a tie by eliminating Physics marks.
    • If there is still a tie by eliminating Chemistry marks.
    • If there is still a tie by eliminating Botany marks.
    • If the tie is still not broken, then a Candidate senior in age rank senior to a candidate who is junior in age.
  • Selected candidates will have to be attend counseling and medical examination at the Institute at their own cost on the notified date. At the time of counseling, candidates will have to attend in person and will have to produce the original Marksheet of the qualifying examination and other original documents mentioned below, such as proof of age, Transfer Certificate, Character Certificate, etc.
  • To fill the vacancies arising due to the failure of appearance by the selected candidates, sufficient number of candidates from the waiting list will also be called for counseling intimating their merit position in order. Such candidates will have to appear for the counseling on the notified date at their own risk and cost.
  • Candidates who failed to attend counseling/medical examination on the notified date shall forfeit their claim for admission and placement in the waiting list

M.D. / M.S. COURSE

SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • Selection is made entirely on the basis of merit in the Entrance Examination. Candidates securing less than 50% marks in the Entrance Examination will not be considered for admission and their names will not be included in the merit list and wait list.
  • Of the total seats, 50% will be for All India PG Entrance Test (AIPGET) and 50% of the seats will be for Open NE [of which 50% (i.e. 25% of overall seats)] will be reserved for students passing MBBS from NEIGRIHMS].
  • Entrance Examination will be conducted by NEIGRIHMS to fill up the seats under the NE open Category only (5 seats)

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

  • Nationality: Applicant must be a Resident Indian National and Permanent Resident/Domicile of one of the 8 (eight) Northeastern states of India including Sikkim.
  • Educational: The candidates must possess MBBS Degree recognized by the Medical Council of India and must have completed One Year Internship training. Every student, selected for admission to postgraduate courses shall possess recognised MBBS degree or equivalent qualification and should have obtained permanent Registration with the Medical Council of India, or any of the State Medical Councils or should obtain the same within on month from the date of his admission, failing which the admission of the candidate shall be cancelled.
  • The candidates who have already done/are pursuing MD/MS in any subject at the time of counseling shall not be considered for admission to MD/MS courses at NEIGRIHMS. If it is found at a later stage that the candidate has given false undertaking at the time of counseling, his/her candidature/registration shall be cancelled.


D.M. / M.CH. COURSE

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

  • Educational Qualifications: A Candidate must possess a degree in MD or DNB from a University recognized by the MCI in Medicine or Paediatrics.
  • Age Limit: 35 years as on 1st January of the year of admission
  • Nationality: Applicant must be a Resident Indian National to be eligible for the open seat and must be a Permanent Resident/Domicile of one of the 8 (eight) Northeastern states of India including Sikkim to be eligible for the NE open seat.

MODE OF SELECTION:

Stage I:

  • Written test carrying 80 marks of 90 minutes duration. The question paper will consist of 50 Theory based Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and 30 clinical/practical/lab based Short Answer Questions (SAQs)/MCQs. Each correct (MCQ) answer will be awarded 1 mark and each wrong (MCQ) answer will be awarded one-third (-1/3) negative mark. More than one answer will be treated as wrong answer and awarded negative mark. Zero mark will be given for questions not answered.

Stage II:

  • Out of the candidates who secured 50% marks or above in the written test (Stage-I), candidates 3 times the number of seats advertised will be called for departmental clinical/ practical / lab based assessment (carrying 20 marks). Out of these candidates called for Departmental Assessment, 50% will be from open category candidates and 50% will be from NE open category applicants.

B.SC. NURSING COURSE

Total Number of Seats: Fifty (50) seats annually.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

Candidates belonging to all categories seeking admission to the B.Sc. Nursing degree course (Basic) should fulfill the following criteria:-

  • Should have passed the Senior School Certificate Examination/ Higher Secondary Examination/Indian School Certificate Examination which is equivalent to 10+2 Examination after a period of twelve (12) years of study.
  • Should secure 45% aggregate or more marks in each of the four (4) subjects i.e., Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English in the10+2 examination.
  • Should have completed the minimum age of 17 years on or before the 31st December, of the year of admission and not exceeding the maximum age of 25 years as on 31st December, of the year of admission.
  • Candidates found guilty of misconduct or convicted for any offence shall not be eligible for admission.
  • Candidates should be a citizen of India.

NEIGRIHMS was established by the Government of India in 1987. It has been designed as a Postgraduate Medical Institute in lineage of AIIMS, New Delhi and PGIMER, Chandigarh. It is the First Postgraduate Medical Institute in the North Eastern Region and the Third in the Country established by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The Institute was registered as a Society on 12th January 1987 by the Registrar of Societies, Meghalaya, Shillong under the name of : “North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences”.

On January 22, 2000, then Hon'ble Prime Minister of India Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee declared NEIGRIHMS as an ‘Institute of National Importance’. The Institute was also declared as an “Institution of Excellence” by an Act of Parliament vide Gazette of India Notification dated 4th January 2007, the only Medical Institute that has been given such a status in the country.

North Eastern region has got a population of about 40 million in an area of about 2.6 Lakh square kms covered by about 400 hospitals where doctor population ratio is approximately 1: 5000 against a national figure 1:2000, with an overall 50% deficiency in medical manpower and overall 60% in total health sector. NEIGRIHMS has been envisaged as the most vital asset to address the shortage in the North Eastern Region in terms of Health care delivery as well as Human Resource Development.

NEIGRIHMS had started the Undergraduate Programmes (MBBS Course) since 2008, Postgraduate Programmes (MD/MS Course) in various departments of Anaesthesiology, Pathology, General Medicine, General Surgery, Microbiology, Gynae and Obstetrics, Anatomy, Radio diagnosis and Imaging since 2009 and Post-Doctoral Programme (DM Cardiology) since 2012. The B. Sc Nursing course was started by the Institute in 2006. The Institute conducts its own professional examinations and entrance examinations for these courses.
