| College History | |
We are proud to declare that pioneer of womens' education in Howrah district, Bijoy Krishna Girls' College (formerly, Girls' College, Howrah) has
celebrated its 60th anniversary year in 2006-2007–which ironically coinsided with the 60th year of Indian independence. It was indeed a bliss to be alive
at the dawn of independence in India on August 15, 1947. It was a heavenly experience also to be young at that time, since the founder Principal, the
Late Bijoy Krishna Bhattacharya, along with some of his educationist friends realised in every fibre of their being the paramount importance of higher
education among the young girls of the time. The college was founded on the first day of August, 1947 with a view to satisfying the gradually increasing
demand for higher education among the girls of the district of Howrah. There is no gainsaying the fact that the foresight of the Founder-Principal and his
enthusiastic friends bore fruit, with the passage of time, in the shape of this largest girls’ college, not merely in India, but also in Asia.
We pay our ‘debt immense’ of ‘endless gratitude’ to our farsighted predecessors for effloresence of this institution. From a humble beginning, the college has made a steady development and now is reckoned with as the most reputed girls’ college in West Bengal. At the same time, this is the singular exclusively girls’ college in
the district. In the year 2005 the college has been assessed and accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council with a B++ grade. We,
however, hope to convert it to an A-grade or even better college. The college offers higher education upto Honours level in 16 subjects in Arts, Science
and Commerce streams, The College is looking forward to introduce Honours Course in Sociology from this session (2008-09) subject to the
approval of C.U.. If finalised the total number of honours courses will add up to 17. We also offer Computer Applications in Vocational Stream and B.
Ed. (An NCTE recognised professional course).
