IISc Bangalore ranked 27th best Asian University: Times Higher Education Ranking 2017

notification

Featuring in the list of best globally recognised universities, IISc (Indian Institute of Science) Bangalore has once again made its mark as Asia's 27th best university according to Times Higher Education (THE) University Rankings 2017. This is for the second year in a row that it retained its rank.

India's progress can be observed by the fact that this time it has 33 of its universities among the top 300 in the Asian university league table. Last year, only 16 of its universities were included among the top 200.

Few days back, THE also released the list of 'Best Small Universities in the World 2017' and IISc Bangalore was ranked eighth globally. It was for the first time, an Indian university had featured in the list of top 10 universities of the world.

As per Livemint report, THE editor Phil Baty said in an email, ''It is great news that India has more than doubled its representation in this year's ranking of Asia's best universities, claiming 33 places in the top-300 list …It means that India is now the third most-represented nation in the table for the first time''.

Other Indian institutes on the list:

  • Going lower down the table, however, India's performance deteriorated as several institutes lost places due to what Baty described as "increased competition."

The second highest ranked institute from India is Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT Bombay), placed at rank 42. Leaving several top IITs behind, Tamil Nadu-based Veltech University secured 43rd rank in Asia. Other top ranking universities such as IIT Delhi and IIT Madras have been ranked 54 and 62 respectively.

The country is still far behind Japan and China, the survey added.

Top 5 in Asia:

  • National University, Singapore
  • Peking University, China
  • Tsinghua University, China
  • Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
  • University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong

Reasons behind India's climb in education quality:

  • It is all due to India's tremendous efforts put into increasing the efficiency of its institutions that it has being climbing the global ladder of best educational institutions.

The THE editor also attributed India's strong performance partly due to participating in global benchmarking exercises. "Last year, the (Indian) government launched a new funding-backed project aimed at catapulting Indian Institutes of Technology to the top of world university rankings," he said.
