Last year, almost 3,000 seats remained vacant across 23 IITs, 32 NITs and some centrally-funded technical institutions.
With few takers of unpopular courses offered by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and other technical institutes in India, it has been decided by the higher authorities to scraps all these courses on immediate basis.
According to reports, it is said that IITs and NIITs themselves recommended the Union Human Resource Development Ministry to discontinue detested the programmes courses in all centrally-funded technical institutions.

Furthermore, the minister in a written reply said, "All Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs), which are participating in joint counsellings have been asked to review the position of vacant seats in the last three years and to revise the number of seats in each discipline after considering employment opportunities, national requirements, available infrastructure and scope for future."
Focusing on the number of seats, last year, almost 3,000 seats remained vacant across 23 IITs, 32 NITs and some centrally-funded technical institutions.
"New courses and disciplines may be introduced only after analysing market opportunity, employability and requirement of higher education/research/entrepreneurship. CFTIs may also consider closure of some disciplines or keep them in abeyance for a few years after following the due process," the minister added.
