South Asian University (SAU) Ph.D. Programme Admission 2017-2018
South Asian University (SAU) which is an international university established by the governments of the eight member nations of the South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (SAARC) has released an official notification inviting all the interested, eligible candidates for admission to PhD programmes.
According to reports, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are part of this university.

Eligibility Criteria:
PhD in Economics
12 years of schooling + a 3 or 4 year Bachelor’s degree + post-graduate education leading to an MA/MSc degree in Economics or related specializations from an institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries, with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate or an equivalent grade.
PhD in Computer Science
12 years of regular schooling + a 3 or 4 year Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree leading to an MSc/MTech degree in Computer Science or allied* disciplines from an institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries, with a minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent grade.
Applicants with 12 years of regular schooling + an integrated Bachelor's and Master's degree of at least 5 years duration are also eligible.
PhD in Applied Mathematics
12 years of regular schooling + a 3 or 4 year Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree leading to an MA/MSc/MTech degree in Mathematics/Computer Science/Statistics/Operations Research/Physics or 12 years of regular schooling + an integrated Bachelor's and Master's degree of at least 5 years duration in Mathematics/Computer Science/Statistics/Operations Research/Physics from an institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries, with a minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent grade.
PhD in Legal Studies
12 years of schooling + a 5 year integrated BA/ LLB programme or a 2 or 3 year Bachelor’s degree followed by a 3 year LLB programme + a 2 year/1 year LLM programme from an institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries, with a minimum of 50% marks or an equivalent grade.
Those who have an LLB degree followed by a one-year LLM degree must have a minimum of 60% marks to be eligible to apply.
PhD in Biotechnology
12 years of schooling + a 3 or 4 year Bachelor’s degree + a 2 year post-graduate MSc or MTech degree in any branch of the Biological Sciences or an MD/MS/MSc from an institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries, with a minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent grade.
PhD in International Relations
12 years of schooling + a 3 or 4 year Bachelor’s degree + a 2 year post-graduate degree in International Relations or related disciplines like Political Science, Economics, Psychology, Anthropology, Sociology, History, Philosophy, Linguistics, Mass Communications, Education, Geography, Law, Social Work, Development Studies, Criminology, Archaeology , Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Post-Colonial Studies, Comparative Literature and Comparative Religious Studies from an institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries, with a minimum of 50% marks, or an equivalent grade.
PhD in Sociology
12 years of schooling + a 3 or 4 year Bachelor’s degree + a 2 year post-graduate degree in Sociology or related disciplines like Political Science, Economics, Psychology, Social Anthropology, History, Philosophy, Linguistics, Mass Communication, Education, Geography, Law, Social Work, Development Studies, Criminology, Archaeology, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Post-Colonial Studies, Comparative Literature, Comparative Religious Studies and Sociology of Science from an institution recognized by the government of any of the SAARC countries, with a minimum of 50% marks or an equivalent grade.
Admission Procedure:
PhD in Economics
It will consist of 2 phases. The first phase consists of an Entrance Test and the minimum marks required to clear the Entrance Test will be 25 (out of 50). Those who are short-listed for the second phase will have to submit a written research proposal and face an interview. A minimum of 50% marks will have to be secured separately, in both the written test and the interview, in order to be eligible for admission. The final merit list will be prepared by totalling the marks obtained in both the phases.
PhD in Computer Science
It will consist of 2 phases, an Entrance Test followed by an Interview. The Entrance Test will carry a weightage of 70 marks and the interview will carry a weightage of 30 marks. A minimum of 50% marks will have to be secured separately, in both the written test and the interview, in order to be eligible for admission.
PhD in Applied Mathematics
Entrance Test and Interview. A minimum of 50% marks will have to be secured separately, in both the Entrance Test and the Interview, in order to be eligible for admission. The weightage of the Entrance Test will be 70 marks and the weightage of the Interview will be 30 marks.
PhD in Legal Studies
An Entrance Test followed by an Interview. 50% of marks from the Entrance Test will be added to the second phase. Candidates will be evaluated out of an overall score of 100 (50% from the Entrance Test and 50% from the proposal, statement of purpose and interview). A minimum of 50% marks will have to be secured separately, in both the Entrance Test and the Interview, in order to be eligible for admission.
PhD in Biotechnology
Through an Entrance Test and an Interview. The Entrance Test will carry a weightage of 70 marks and the Interview will carry a weightage of 30 marks. A minimum of 50% marks will have to be secured separately in both, the Entrance Test and the Interview, in order to be eligible for admission.
PhD in International Relations

Application Fee:
An Entrance Test will be conducted simultaneously throughout the SAARC region on 9 April 2017. The fee for appearing in the Entrance Test is US $10 or INR 670/-. Applications for admission will be accepted only online and payment must be made by credit/debit cards or net banking. Those who cannot pay the application fee online still need to fill and submit the online application form. They can then courier a bank draft for US$ 10 or INR 670/- drawn in favour of “South Asian University” payable at New Delhi to the Deputy Registrar Admissions, South Asian University, Akbar Bhawan, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi 110021, India. The bank draft must have the name of the candidate, application number and the programme applied for at the back of the bank draft. However, registration will be done only on receipt of the bank draft.
Seat Reservation:
The available seats in each programme will be divided as follows: Fifty per cent seats for Indian students and the remaining 50% seats for all other seven SAARC countries put together. Two merit lists will be prepared, one for Indian applicants and the other will be a combined merit list for the remaining SAARC countries. In view of the small number of seats available in each programme, seat reservation for individual countries is not possible.
