University of Calicut Ph.D. Programme Admission 2017-2018

Applications are invited from eligible candidates for admission to the Ph.D programme under the streams (1) Full-time and (2) Part-time under the faculties of Science, Language & Literature, Humanities, Commerce & Management Studies, Education, Journalism and Fine Arts of this University. Candidates should verify vacancy position prior to the payment of application fee.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. programme shall have a Masters degree or a professional degree recognized as equivalent to the Masters degree of the University of Calicut, with at least grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or at least 55% marks in aggregate in the mark system or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.
  • A relaxation of 10% of marks, from 55% to 45%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, shall be allowed to candidates belonging to SC/ST category. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, shall be allowed to those belonging to OBC (non-creamy layer)/differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decisions of the University/State Government from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master’s degree prior to 19 th September, 1991.
  • Eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of marks/grades to the categories as mentioned in Clause 1.2 above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks exclusive of the grace mark procedures.
  • Candidates who have passed the M.Phil. Degree programme with a minimum of grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent shall be eligible to proceed to do research work leading to the Ph.D. Degree in the same institution. A relaxation of 10% of marks, from 55% to 45%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, shall be allowed to candidates belonging to SC/ST category. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, shall be allowed to those belonging to OBC (non-creamy layer)/ differently-abled and other categories of candidates, as decided by the State government/University from time to time.
  • A candidate whose M.Phil. dissertation has been evaluated and the viva voce is pending may be admitted to the Ph.D. programme of the same institution.
  • Candidates possessing a Degree considered equivalent to M.Phil. degree of an Indian Institution, from a Foreign Educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme.
  • Persons working in National Laboratories- Institutes / Universities / Government Organization nominated / sponsored by the respective employer; Teachers of the University / Government or Aided Colleges affiliated to the University / Govt. or Aided Secondary and Higher Secondary School within the geographical jurisdiction of the University and holding a permanent position there shall be eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme, provided they satisfy the conditions.

Entrance Test:

  • Research Departments may conduct the entrance test.
  • All the candidates getting a minimum of 50% marks and in the case of SC/ST categories of candidates a minimum of 40% marks and in the case of OBC(non-creamy layer)/differently-abled and other categories of candidates a minimum of 45% marks, as the case may be, in the entrance test are qualified to apply for registration to Ph.D. Programme.

Admission Criteria:

  • Students who have been shortlisted after the entrance examination, or otherwise eligible, apply to the Department/Centre/Affiliated Colleges (choose only one, based on preference given in the application), directly, in the prescribed forms along with application fee for admission.
  • The application fee shall be remitted to the Calicut University Fund and the forms will be issued by the University.
  • Those who are exempted from entrance test can seek admission any time in a year, in the prescribed format.

Procedure of Application:

  • Applications can be submitted online from 13.02.2017 to 27.02.2017 midnight. Please see the link 'fee remittance' in the Admission Website (www.cuonline.ac.in) or the link 'instant web payment system' in the Official Website of the University (www.universityofcalicut.info) for remitting fee and submitting online application. The application and entrance examination fee of Rs.550/- (SC/ST Rs.220/) shall be remitted to Calicut University Fund (Select the purpose 'Application and entrance examination fee for Ph.D admission 2017) by e-payment (SBT online/SBT e-chalan /Friends/Akshaya e-chalan /Payment Gateway)
  • The print out of the application duly attested along with e-challan receipt of Rs.550/- (Rs.220/- for SC/ST candidates) towards application and Entrance Examination fee (SC/ST candidates shall also attach a copy of the community certificate along with application) should reach the Head of the University Teaching Departments concerned on or before 3rd March 2017, 5.00 PM. However, in the case of those subjects, which have not been offered in the Teaching Departments of this University, such applications should be submitted to the Director, Directorate of Admission, Tagore Nikethan ,University of Calicut on or before 3rd March 2017, 5.00 PM.

Vacancy position in different subjects/disciplines has been attached as annexure below.

Defective applications and applications received after the prescribed date will summarily be rejected and fee once paid will not be refunded or adjusted for any other purpose.

Eligible candidates after the entrance examination should apply for admission in the prescribed format along with a chalan of Rs.50/-.
