Admissions to M.A. (Hons) / M.Sc. (Hons) for 2010-2011


Admission to the First Year Post-Graduate Courses in Arts and Science,
During the Session 2010-2012

Application form along with information brochure for admission to the first year M.A. / M.Sc. classes will be available from the college office on payment of Rs. 110.00 each on production of original mark-sheet ( Part I, II and III of 1+1+1 system and Part I & II of 2+1 system ) between 11.30 a.m. and 2.00 p.m. on 21st to 27th july 2010 [ except 24th july, 2010(saturday) & 25th july, 2010(sunday) ].

Candidates willing to apply for admission in the academically autonomous courses such as English, Bengali, Hindi, Physics, Chemistry, Geography (M.Sc), Applied Geology, Botany, Physiology, Zoology, Applied Economics, Environmental System Management, Molecular Biology & Genetics and Bio-Technology shall have to fill up the application form for presidency college only.

Candidates willing to apply for Philosophy, History, Political Science, Sociology, Sanskrit and Mathematics through presidency college as a constituent college of the university of calcutta shall have to submit a filled up admission form (original) of the university of calcutta along with the application form for presidency college. eligibility for these courses will be as per norms set by university of calcutta.

Applications with attested photocopies of mark-sheets ( Part I, II and III of 1+1+1 system and Part I & II of 2+1 system ) will be received at the college office on above mentioned dates between 2.30 p.m. and 5.00 p.m.

Seats will be reserved for SC, ST & ‘persons with disabilities’ as per state government directives.


Eligibility

General :
Candidates passing the B.A. / B.Sc examination (10+2+3) from the university of Calcutta with first class &/or second class honors and candidates from other universities recognized by UGC with first class honors shall be eligible to apply for post-graduate courses. 5% of the total seats may be filled up by the candidates from other universities but may be increased in case of extraordinary meritorious candidates. other information may be available in the admission brochure available with the admission form.

Environmental System Management :
At least 55% marks in B.Sc.(Hons.) with chemistry as one of the combination subjects at graduation level.

Molecular biology and genetics :
B.Sc. (Hons.) with chemistry as one of the combination subjects at graduation level. the candidate must have secured at least 55% marks in B.Sc. (Hons.) and 60% marks in H.S. (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology as combination subjects.

Bio-technology :
1st class honors graduate degree in any discipline of Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Physics. The candidate must have secured at least 60% marks in H.S. (equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology.

Physics : 50% marks in physics (Hons.)
Geography : 55% marks in geography (Hons.)
Physiology : 50% marks in physiology (Hons.)
Bengali : Hons. in Bengali
Hindi : 50% marks in Hindi (Hons.)
English : 50% marks in English (Hons.)
Applied Geology : Hons. in geology
Zoology : Hons. in zoology
Applied Economics: Hons. in economics
Chemistry : 50% marks in chemistry (Hons.)
Botany : Hons. in botany

Minimum eligibility for SC & ST candidates is honors graduate in respective discipline.

Those who have passed B.A. / B.Sc. final examination prior to 2009 are not eligible to apply for the academic session 2010 - 12.

Candidates belonging to SC / ST must submit attested copy of the caste certificate from competent authority & ‘persons with disabilities’ must submit attested copy of the certificate from the competent authority along with the application form failing which their claim will not be entertained.


Selection

Admission will be offered strictly on merit basis.

Applicants for M.Sc. in Applied Economics, Geography, Physiology, Physics, ‘Molecular Biology & Genetics’ and ‘Environmental System Management’ shall have to appear for an admission test.

Shortlisted applicants (first 150 candidates from general category & all SC / ST candidates) for english shall have to appear for an interview. Merit list will be prepared on the basis of marks obtained in Honors subject (80% weightage) & marks obtained in interview (20% weightage).

For Geography, Applied Economics, Physiology, Physics, Molecular Biology & Genetics merit list will be prepared on the basis of marks obtained in the admission test (50% weightage) along with the marks obtained in the Hons. subject (50% weightage).

For Environmental System Management, merit list will be prepared on the basis of marks obtained in the admission test only.

For Bengali, Hindi, Applied Geology, Botany, Zoology, Chemistry & Biotechnology, merit list will be prepared on the basis of marks obtained in Honors subject.

In case of Chemistry, merit list will be prepared on the basis of marks obtained in Honors subject. “Proportionate Reservation Rule” (i.e. % of applications from students of autonomous undergraduate college/s under University of Calcutta against number of application from non-autonomous undergraduate college/s under university of calcutta) will be applicable in case of students of autonomous undergraduate college/s.

For Biotechnology separate merit list will be prepared for each discpline. Such shortlisted candidates will be selected through interview.

For all subjects, candidates from other universities will have to appear before an interview board except thouse appeared in the admission test/s.
