B.A.LL.B.(Hons.) Degree – Admission Procedure

Eligibility

A candidate for admission to the B.A.LL.B.(Honours) must have –

  • Passed the Higher Secondary (10+2) or an equivalent examination securing in aggregate not less than 45% (General Category) or 40% (SC/ST and OBC Category) of the total marks. Provided that those who will be passing their Higher Secondary (10+2) or equivalent examination this year can go through the selection process and seek provisional admission.
  • Not completed 20 years of age as on 1st July,2014. In case of candidates belonging to SC/ST category a relaxation of 2 years in age shall be admissible. In exceptional and deserving cases the upper age limit may be relaxed by the Administrative Head at Kolkata.

Number of Seats and Reservation

The total number of seats available for B.A.LL.B.(Honours) degree programme shall ordinarily be 120 (One Hundred Twenty) divided into two sections. Out of these total available seats, 15% and 10% seats are reserved for candidates belonging to SC , ST and OBC categories respectively, subject to their fulfilling BCI eligibility criteria. The number of seats available under management quota shall not be more than 10% of the total available seats.

Admission Procedure

Admissions to the B.A.LL.B.(Honours) Degree Programme shall be on the basis of marks as obtained in the preceding examination i.e. 10 + 2 examination as held under the State Board or Central Board or internationally recognized 12th standard examination. However since seats are limited to 120 only divided into two sections, therefore, admission shall be strictly according to marks on first cum basis. The candidates after being selected shall be informed personally by telephone / letter / fax / e-mail. The selected candidates shall be required to present themselves for counseling at SKAIL campus, Kalyani on the date to be informed. The object of counselling is to enable the faculty to assess and evaluate the candidates’ suitability for the programme. The candidates are required to bring all certificates in original at the time of counseling for verification. Thereafter, the students will then be given admission on their payment of the course fees and other fees. However, counseling can also be conducted at our administrative head office located in 2, church lane, 1st floor, Room No. 101A, Oswal Chambers, Kolkata – 700001 (beside Indian Overseas Bank), where Administrative head shall be available to meet all queries on prior appointment. Admission can also be taken on provisional basis just after the completion of 12th standard examination which shall be confirmed on production of the final mark sheet as obtained from the State or Central Board. If there are any vacant seats after completion of the admission process, the candidates in the waiting list shall be informed about it, strictly in order of their position in the waiting list, to present themselves for counseling on a subsequent date.


Proposed LL.M. Degree – Admission Procedure

Eligibility

A candidate for admission to LL.M. degree programme should have passed the LL.B. degree examination of a recognized University having secured not less than 50% of marks in the aggregate out of the maximum marks prescribed.

Admission Procedure

Eligible candidates desirous of getting admission to LL.M. Degree Course shall apply in the prescribed form within the last date stipulated. Prescribed application forms can be obtained from the office of SKAIL by sending a Demand Draft for Rs. 350/- drawn on any nationalised bank in favour of S. K. Acharya Institute of Law and payable at Kalyani. Candidates for LL.M. Course shall be selected on the basis of a combined assessment of:

  • Performance at the admission test conducted by the Institute; and
  • Past academic record at the LL.B. Degree Examination. On the basis of the above, applicants will be short listed for initial selection. Such candidates shall then be called for a group discussion on the basis of which the final selection shall be made.

However, the LL.M. Degree Programme is only at the stage of contemplation and subject to approval of the University Authority.

Duration

LL.M. Degree Course is of two years duration. Each year shall comprise of two Semesters. The LL.M. degree programme shall be spread over four semesters and shall comprise thirteen courses. The courses of study shall be as follows:

Foundation Courses – 4 courses – 400 Marks
Optional Courses – 6 courses – 600 Marks
(From any one Optional group)
Practical Course – 1 course – 100 Marks
Dissertation – 2 courses – 200 Marks
(Equivalent to 2 Courses)
Total 13 courses – 1300 Marks

S.K.ACHARYA INSTITUTE OF LAW (SKAIL) was established by SIKKIM BENGAL EDUCATIONAL TRUST (SBET) in 2004 on the campus of University of Kalyani. The institute is named after Late Snehangshu Kanta Acharya , Bar-at-Law, the legal luminary of Bengal, renowned for his contributions in the field of law and philanthropy. The institute was formally inaugurated on 30th June, 2004 by Hon’ble Shri. Jyoti Basu, former Chief Minister of West Bengal in presence of galaxy of dignitaries.

The primary objective of SKAIL is advancement of learning, teaching, research and dissemination of knowledge of law and development of competence and skills of students intending to take up judicial service, legal consultancy, advocacy, corporate law management and teaching of law as professional career.
