Survey Methodology
The objective of this research was to arrive at a list
of top schools in Kolkata. The study had two major
modules i.e. perceptual rating survey & factual survey.
In the perceptual survey module, a strucutred Questionnaire was administered to selected respondents to arrive at a ranking & rating of schools in Kolkata. The sample selection was done using convenience sampling method though the sample was spread out geographically to get better representation. The initial list of schools had over 136 schools of Kolkata, though each respondent was asked to give ratings for only those schools that he/she is aware of and considers it to be among the top 10 schools in Kolkata or their area. Thus a maximum of 20 schools were rated by each respondent. This ensured that there was neither interviewer nor respondent fatigue and thus ensured better quality data.
A sample survey of 300 was conducted in (All 5 zones – South, East, West, North & Central) Kolkata. The geographical spread of the sample wa ensured by selecting multiple starting points spread across the city. There were two main respondent categories who were interviewed to evaluate schools; those who had the experience of such schools (Experiential) and those who are currently searching and aspiring to get admissions for their ward and evaluating these schools (Perceptual). The respondent categories included:
Experiential
School teachers
Alumni
Experienced parents
Students
Perceptual
Aspiring parents
Fieldwork was conducted beginning from last week of November to the 1st week of December 2014.
Module I: List of Schools for the Survey
The module 1 was a secondary research module. A comprehensive list of schools was generated with the help of internet, magazines and other publications. The various sources used for generation of school list included:
List of school from previous surveys
All Private Schools in Kolkata
A discussion with industry experts to add / delete any school to ensure we have a comprehensive list
As it is not possible to get a completely exhaustive list of schools and include them in the survey, we had option of adding any new school name in the survey form if any respondent mentioned any school name outside our list. Effectively, every school had a chance of getting covered in the survey if their name was mentioned by the respondents.
Module 2: Perceptual Survey
A perception questionnaire was administered to respondents. Respondents were asked to give rating for only those schools which they were aware of and had included them in their list of top schools in Kolkata or their zone.
Respondents were provided a list of parameters to evaluate the schools & rate on a scale of 1-10 where 1 means poor & 10 means for excellent. The list of parameters covered in the survey was arrived at based on past surveys as well as discussions with experts from the industry experts and teachers etc.
As mentioned above 5 different stakeholders were taken into consideration for the perceptual survey viz. Teachers, Alumni, Parents of aspiring students, Parents of existing students & Students.
The questionnaire was so designed that both experiential & perceptual target respondents could be exposed to the same set of parameters – this ensured that the scores of different stakeholders could be correlated and collated to arrive at a single final score.
MODULE 3: FACTUAL DATA COLLECTION
136 schools were sent the factual data questionnaire and then rigorously followed up through telephonic and personal visits.
The factual data sheet focuses on the following information areas:
General information of the School: Establishment, Affiliation etc.
Infrastructure & facilities
Sports facilities in your school
Cultural/extra-curricular facilities in your school
Medical facilities in your school
Teachers
Potential to network
Exchange programs and global exposure
Awards
ANALYSIS: FINAL RANKING OF SCHOOL
A robust approach is followed to arrive at the final rankings. The step by step process is given below:
Perceptual Score
Ratings on various parameters for each school
Calculating importance of various parameters to arrive at weights for each parameter – we use aregression model to arrive at the importance of various parameters
Calculation of raw scores and weighted scores for each parameter
Calculation of overall score for each school using importance weightages.
Factual Score
The information collected corresponding to similar parameters as in the perceptual survey
A detailed scoring system has been developed for each parameter
After assigning scores to each parameter, raw scores are calculated
The raw scores are weighted by their importance to arrive at weighted scores
The final school score are calculated as in the perception survey
The final score for a school are a weighted average of Perception Score and Factual Score - equal weight age given to both
Some caveats / assumptions:
Only those schools for whom we received more than 10 responses, are included in the ranking
Further a few schools refused to participate in the survey – such schools are removed from the list
Some of the schools could not provide the factual data completely for their schools
For all such gaps, an average score is assigned to the school concerned
Only schools that have been in existence for 5 years of more i.e. established after 2009 earlier have been included in the overall ranking.
However, in case of Emerging Schools segments – we have considered those schools which were relatively newer and established post year 2009
Also, schools with less than 10 responses were considered for Emerging School Segment
Note: Present survey has been conducted by an independent Research Agency named i3 Research Consultants using stated methodology for arriving at given rankings.
