Admission 2017

  • The academic session of the College extends from 1st July to 30th June every year. All classes are open to both men and women students except the B.Ed. course in Department of Teacher Education which is restricted to women students. Application for admission must be made on the on-line application form available in the website: www.scottishadmissions.com. The originals must be produced at the time of admission and college fees must be paid immediately after verification of the documents. Admission will be given strictly in accordance with the norms prescribed by the Admission Committee.

  • A candidate may be admitted to the first Year B.A./B.Sc./B.Com. (Honours/General/Major) courses of studies on passing (10+2) Examination in General or Vocational Stream conducted by the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education or an equivalent examination conducted by other State Board/Council, Rabindra Mukta Vidyalaya or National Open School recognised by the Distant Learning Council subject to the fulfillment of the conditions mentioned below:

    In case of other Boards/Councils, a candidate shall have to pass in four recognised subjects of full marks not being less than 100 each of which one shall be English.

    Marks obtained in top four subjects shall be considered to ascertain the aggregate marks of a candidate passing the examination under grade system. Also for candidates passing the (10+2) Examination from West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education under old system, marks obtained in top four subjects shall be considered to determine their aggregate marks.

    Marks obtained at the (10+2) Examination conducted by the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education or its equivalent in Environmental Education as a compulsory subject shall not be taken into account for calculating the aggregate marks in top four subjects for the purpose of admission to the degree course of studies in this University.
  • A candidate taking up Honours Course in a subject must have obtained:
    • A minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate and 45% marks in the subject or related subject at the previous qualifying examination.

      OR
    • 55% in the subject or related subject at the previous qualifying examination

      OR
    • 50% marks in aggregate when the candidate has not studied the subject in his/her previous qualifying examination provided all other clauses are satisfied. However, candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe community taking up Honours Course of Study must have obtained a minimum of 40% marks in the subject or related subjects at the previous qualifying examinations, as the case may be.

Please note the following :
  • No distinction between West Bengal Board and Other Boards
  • Aggregate means Total Marks of the Best FOUR Subjects (at least 100 marks paper) excluding ENVS in the qualifying exam
  • Best Four Subjects include the Honours subject applied for wherever applicable
  • Number in brackets () indicates the total number of seats available in the subject
  • Admission through Merit List based on Index Mark : For Physics (Hons.) through Admission Test for General Merit Category. Direct Admission for Sanskrit & Philosophy
  • Merit list is prepared based on Index Mark for all categories of students, unless otherwise specified.
  • Must have passed in English (with atleast 100 Marks paper)

For SC/ST applicants, the following minimum as required by the Calcutta University applies. Minimum 40% marks in aggregate or 40% marks in the subject or related subject at the qualifying examination.

For PH/Christian applicants, minimum criteria to apply are as follows:
(Among Christian applicants, preference is given to those from Communion of Churches in India (CNI/CSI/Mar Thoma)

  • A minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate and 45% marks in the subject or related subject in the qualifying examination. - OR -
  • 55% marks in the subject or related subject in the qualifying examination - OR -
  • 50% marks in aggregate when the candidate has not studied the subject in his/her qualifying examination provided all other clauses are satisfied.


College Rules

College Rules

1) Students are required to maintain regular attendance to be eligible for appearing in the University examination. They should follow the parameters given below:

i) Collegiate : Attendance of 75% and above ( the remaining 25% covers absence due to medical and other reasons) is required to become eligible to appear for University examination.

ii) Non-Collegiate : Attendance of 60% and above ( the remaining 40% covers absence due to medical and other reasons) is required to become eligible to appear for University examinations only after paying a fine as per Calcutta University rules.

iii) Dis-Collegiate : Attendance below 60% - ( 25% covers absence due to all reasons including medical ) implies that the student is not eligible to be sent up for University examinations as per Calcutta University norms.

2) If a student is absent for more than two consecutive weeks without prior permission / intimation, his/her name is likely to be struck off the register.

3) Science students who do not attend theoretical classes regularly shall not be permitted to attend practical classes.

4) Students must pass the college examinations for being sent up for University Examinations. Any student absent in any examination on medical grounds must submit before the end of the examinations or within three days of its completion a medical certificate and a letter to the Vice-Principal from the guardian stating the grounds for his/her absence. Such cases may be considered with sympathy, but it must be understood that illness is not in itself a valid excuse. Sending up, in such cases will not be granted unless the student record is very good. Sending up lists are displayed on the notice board.

5) Students must wear and display visibly their Identity Cards during College hours inside the Campus. A student must produce Identity Card as and when demanded. It should be carefully preserved. In case of loss of Identity Card, a duplicate can be obtained only on permission by the Principal/the Vice-Principal and on payment of a fine of Rs. 70/- and preferably with a GD from the police station in this regard.

6) A student failing to clear the fees within notified date will have to secure re-admission on payment of full fees again with prior approval of the Principal/ Vice-Principal.

7) Students are expected to treat the members of the staff and their fellow students with courtesy both in and out of the College. There must be no disorderly or offensive conduct at any time.

8) Students must be in their classes and take their seats when the bell rings at the beginning of each period. They must not enter or leave the class room without permission.

9) College property, furniture, library books, etc. must be treated with due care.

10) Rules for the conduct of examinations are placed on the Notice Board and must be strictly observed.

11) Impersonation at roll call is a punishable offence. The Principal/Vice Principal has authority to impose fine or other appropriate punishment and in extreme cases may suspend or expel an offender.

12) Students are required to check the Notice Board for any important notice/ announcement before they leave the college every day.

13) Students are expected to be formally and decently dressed while in the College.

14) Use of tobacco products including smoking, chewing tobacco products, playing cards, spitting and loitering is strictly prohibited within the College and Hostel campuses and shall invite punishment.

15) MOBILE PHONES are liable to be confiscated and/or a penalty of Rs. 200/- will be imposed if used in places other than permitted areas within the college campus.

16) A subject which is not taught in the college will not be permitted in the combination of subjects.

17) Any change in combination for elective subject(s) with the approval of the Vice-Principal must be done within one month from the date of commencement of classes. No application in this regard will be entertained after that.

GENERAL INFORMATION

HOSTELS -

For the accommodation of outstation students the College has five hostels, viz the Lady Jane Dundas Hostel (for girls), the Students' Residence (for girls), the Duff Hostel, the Wann Hostel and the Ogilvie Hostel. The Lady Jane Dundas Hostel and Duff Hostel are primarily for Christian students.

LIBRARY

The college has a large and well-equipped Library containing more than one lac books, journals and periodicals on various subject. This is complemented by the several departmental libraries serving specific needs of the Honours students. There is also a Book Bank from which students may borrow text books as well.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND PRIZES

Several scholarships are given to the students by the College. Concession in fees and stipends are also granted to deserving candidates. Good academic performance is acknowledged with a large number of prizes every year.

RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION AND WORSHIP

Classes on religious instruction are held as a regular part of the work of the college. Prayers are held daily in the College Hall at 9:30 a.m. before the commencement of the classes.

ATHLETICS

The college has a spacious playground situated at Canal East Road intended for the students of the College and Collegiate school. Football, Cricket, Badminton, Hockey, Basket-ball and Volley-ball are played here.

COLLEGE MAGAZINE

The College magazine is published annually. Students and Staff are expected to contribute articles, paintings, photographic entries etc. to it.

STUDENTS' ACTIVITY CLUBS

Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities by becoming members of the various clubs, viz., Nature Study & Photography Club, Budding Painters’ Club, Debating Society, Literary Society, Western & Indian Music Club, Dance & Drama Club.

The Student's Union is the representative body of the students

STUDENTS' HEALTH HOME

Students are required to take a mandatory membership of the Students' Health Home by paying the necessary charges per session.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

Numerous extension activities are promoted to inculcate a sense of civic responsibility and community orientation. The College provides many activities for intellectual stimulation and development, sports and games, NSS and cultural activities to facilitate all-round personality development of the students, training them in team-work, organization and leadership providing opportunities for developing their latent creative talents.

PLACEMENT CELL

The College has a Placement Cell which looks after the placement & career guidance of the U.G. & P.G. students of the college. The Placement Cell is situated on the ground floor of the B.Ed Building.

MEDICAL FACILITIES

On campus medical facilities for the staff and students are available. Emergency medical services are available.

INTERNET FACILITIES

Internet facility is available for the student of the college. Detailed information is available with the Librarian. Students have access to inflibnet.

ALUMNI REUNION

A number of Departments of the college have alumni reunions. The Chemistry, Economics, Political Science, Bengali, Botany, Physics, Philosophy & Teacher Education departments organize reunions bi-annually / annually. Other departments are in the process of organizing their own reunions in course of time.

Admission to the College is granted provisionally on the understanding that the student undertakes to conform in all respects to the rules and discipline of the College.

The fees shown below (subject to minor changes) include Admission Fee, Annual Fee, Lab Charges, Lab Development Fee, Library Caution Money, Security Deposit and Tuition Fee. These are collected in two instalments - Instalment-1 at the time of Admission and Instalment-2, subsequently after due notification.

The date of payment of various fees may be obtained from the college office. In case of late payment the college office will realize a fine as per college rules. The names of [the (delete)] defaulters will be struck off the rolls and such students will have to seek re-admission as per college rules.
