Sitananda College owes its origin to a widespread intellectual movement that swept across Bengal immediately after the independence and was felt even in the remotest comers of the state. As it happened people of almost all the sections of this remote comer of West Bengal felt the necessity of an institution of higher education that would cater to the needs of the thousands of students passing out of the schools of the locality. The intellectuals came forward to give a concrete shape to the hopes and aspirations of the common people but the latter were not to be left behind in terms of material contribution to the realization of a general hope. The movement was basically started by the intellectuals like late Dr. P.K. Bhowmik, the eminent Anthropologist of international stature, Late Dr. B.N. Chandra and Late Bhoopal Chandra Panda. This great ideal was materialised and substantiated by some large hearted wealthy people of the society. Moreover, the common people voluntarily contributed with common materials like wood, bamboo etc. physical labour and most importantly keen interest. There is an interesting story behind the name of the college. From the initial suggestions of quite a few alternative it was decided that the financial contribution of two major donar would be acknowledge in the name of the college. The first part of SITANANDA-SITA was taken from Sitanath Pal, father of Benimadhav Pal, and the other part - ANANDA - was taken from Ananda Mohan Maity, Father of Kshirode Chandra Maity of Dhanyakhola donated the amount of Rs, 60,000 (Sixty Thousand only) and late Taraknath Bera of Gadaibalbard donated some acres of land. Sitananda college began to odessey on 21st July, 1960, in two stretchy tile - shaded buildings with the affiliation of Calcutta University and subsequently from 1985 of Vidyasager University. The college started functioning from its inception with two faculties Arts and Science Honours courses were introduced in different subjects in different year like Bengali Honours in 1966, Mathematics and Political Science in 1970.
