Admission Rules :

  • Separate application in prescribed form for each subject in advance(Honours/General Courses of study) is to be submitted. Applicants have to buy also the College Prospectus along with the application forms.
  • Completed application forms along with attested photocopies of
    • Marksheet of H.S./equivalent exam.
    • Admit Card of Previous Exams.
    • Relevant Documents
    • Caste Certificates (if necessary)

Attestation must be done by the Head of The Institution/College Principal/Gazetted Officer.

Forms may be cancelled if not properly filled in or if any wrong or misleading information is given by the candidate. However, Submission of application forms is not an assurance of admission.

Students are admitted on basis of their performance in the last qualifying exams. A merit list will be published. Applications whose names appear on the merit list will be asked to assemble and there after through a process of counseling seats will be filled strictly in order of merit from amongst the assembled applicants.

The College accepts no responsibilities for cancellation of admission or for any other eventuality due to suppressions or miss-statement of facts by students at the time of admission and for any admission made inadvertently in contravention of any rule of the University of Calcutta.

A Candidate taking up Honours course in a subject must obtain marks in H.S. level as per University Norms. In case of admission in Economics Honours, marks obtained in Mathematics in H.S. level will be considered.

For the B.A./B.Sc.(Honours, General & Major) courses of studies a candidate is required to choose his/her Honours and two/three elective subjects, as the case may be from the list of subject combinations.

    The College has National Cadets Corp (N.C.C.) Unit 2(B) Bn N.C.C. (both for boys ans girls). Students paticipating in the N.C.C. are preferred in Government, Jobs,N.C.C. students attend N.I.C., C.A.T.C., A.A.C., trekking and other camps within and outside the state as and when required.

    The main objective of the National Service Scheme unit of Sovarani Memorial College, Howrah, is: To survey a village and adopt awareness programmes pertaining to health and welfare service, life and living conditions of the inhabitants of that particular village. The NSS unit has also introduced specific health related awareness programmes among the villagers. The NSS unit of the college endeavours to adopt measures to beautify the college campus as well as carry out awareness programmes like pulse-polio, HIV-AIDS, Thalassemia and literacy campaigns to assess the rate of school dropouts from time to time.

    It is a matter of great pleasure to all of us that with a grant sanctioned by the Sports and Youth Affairs Department, the Government of India, the college has established a Gymnasium of its own with all modern gadgets in one of the rooms of the College premises.

Founded at Goalpota in December 1971, Sovarani Memorial College inherits a History of progressive development both in infrastructural and educational level. It has now its own premise. The College with its green complex of about 3.15 acres of land, with a flower garden, Greenfield and ponds is situated about 35 km away from the din and bustle of Kolkata. Late Satyanarayan Khan, a highly revered social activist of this village, to fulfill the aspiration of his deceased wife late Sovarani Devi, established this college. The founders kept in mind the need of the local people.

Today this co-educational college offers undergraduate courses also in the science and commerce, besides Humanities streams. At present ten Honours subjects and fourteen general subjects from the curriculum of the College.

The College initially started functioning as an Arts College with only Commerce being taught at Pre University level. From its Goalpota campus the College later shifted to its present building on 27th November, 1972. During its first academic session(1971-72) the college, affiliated to the University of Calcutta, offered subjects like English, Bengali, Political Science, Philosophy and History. Dr.Anadi Kumar Mahapatra, Head of the Department of Political Science was the first Teacher-in-charge of the College while Mr.Nanda Lal Ghosh, Bar-at-law, was the first President of the College.

The College has on its own premise classrooms, well-equipped laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology, office and Principal’s room; the Principal’s Quarter, the Rajat Jayanti Bhawan and the Library building. NAAC is an autonomous organization, established by the UGC in 1994. The NAAC peer team visited the college on 30th & 31st Dec, 2004. The College has been accredited at the Blevel(Score:73.3%).
