Applications are invited for admission to the PhD program of the Institute through the on-line portal starting from 2nd July, 2018 in all disciplines of Engineering & Technology, Architecture, Town & Regional Planning, Humanities & Social Sciences, and Sciences.     • All the applicants have to go through a qualifying research entrance test (RET) which include written test followed by interviewfor registering in the Ph.D programme in IIEST.
    • Candidates, who are already working in a research project in the Institute, may be allowed to appear in the test with and if selected, a clear no objection certificate (NOC) from the PI of the concerned project is needed for availing the institute fellowship and in such cases, he/she would be treated as a new candidate and has to start from the enrollment procedure afresh.
    • After selection, the aspiring candidate has to give an option whether she/he will take Institute Fellowship or national level agency-based fellowship like UGC/CSIR/INSPIRE etc.
    • There is no provision for part time Ph.D course at IIEST, Shibpur.

  • Eligibility :
    • Eligibility criterion for Engineering:
      B.E. / B.Tech. and M.E. / M.Tech. in the respective branch with at least 60% marks or equivalent grade or at least 6.5 CGPA on the scale of 10, throughout her/his academic career. It is mandatory for the applicant to have got admitted to the preceeding M.Tech. program through GATE only.
      No intermediate GATE score would be entertained.

      B.E. / B.Tech. candidate, in exceptional case, seeking admission to the programme should have at least 80% or 8.5 CGPA on the scale of 10 throughout her/his academic career and a valid GATE score.
    • Architecture, Town and Regional Planning:
      The eligibility criterion for persons intending to take admission to Ph.D. programme offered by the Department is as follows:
      Bachelor of Architecture, and, Master of Architecture or Master of Planning or Master of Design (or their equivalent) with 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA on the scale of 10 throughout his/her academic career. It is essential that the applicant admitted to the M.Arch. / M.Plan. / M.Des. programme must have been through GATE or CEED, as is applicable. No intermediate GATE/CEED score will be entertained. Bachelor of Architecture candidates seeking admission should have 80% or 8.5 CGPA on the scale of 10 throughout her/his academic career and a valid GATE/CEED score.
    • Aerospace Engineering and Applied Mechanics:
      B.E. / B.Tech. or Equivalent in Aerospace / Mechanical / Civil Engineering / Allied Discipline, M.E. / M.Tech. / M.S. in Aerospace / Mechanical / Civil Engineering / Applied Mechanics / Engineering Mechanics or Allied Discipline. Candidates should have first class/division marks or 6.5 CGPA on the scale of 10 throughout his/her academic career.

      B.E. / B.Tech. candidates seeking admission should have 80% or 8.5 CGPA and a valid GATE score.

      It is essential that the applicant be admitted to the 2-year M.Tech. / M.E. program through GATE only during his / her post graduation. No intermediate GATE score will be entertained.
    • Science:
      Postgraduate degree in the respective stream with NET/GATE qualification with at least 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA on the scale of 10 throughout his/her academic career.
    • Humanities and Social Sciences:
      Postgraduate degree in the respective stream with NET qualification with at least 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA on the scale of 10 throughout his/her academic career.

      Age: For Institute scholarship: 28 years as on 1 July 2018.

      Center of Excellence for Green Energy and Sensor Systems:
      • Engineering: B.E. / B.Tech. & M.E. / M.Tech. in Renewable Energy / Electrical Engg. / Mechanical Engg. / Electronics and Telecommunication Engg. / Electronics and Communication Engineering branches, with first class/division marks or 6.5 CGPA throughout his/her academic career on the scale of 10. It is essential that the applicant admitted to the 2-year M.Tech. program must have been through GATE only. No intermediate GATE score will be entertained.
        B.E. / B.Tech. candidates seeking admission must have 80% or 8.5 CGPA on the scale of 10 and a valid GATE score.
      • Science: Graduate degree in Physics, Chemistry, Electronics stream with NET/GATE qualification with 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA on the scale of 10 in the qualifying graduate and post graduate examinations.
      [Note: For SC/ST/Differently Abled candidates, an overall minimum of 55% marks (or equivalent in the Grade point system) and an age relaxation up to 5 years is applicable. This age relaxation will also be applicable in case of women candidates.]
  • Reservation for SC/ST/OBC :
    As per rules of Government of India.

    Above eligibility is only the minimum requirement only. Mere fulfillment of the minimum qualification does not guarantee in any way selection and admission in the programme.
  • Application Process :
    • Candidates can apply for the RET online
    • They can visit the official website www.iiests.ac.in to fill the application form.
    • Candidates should fill the application form and upload the scanned copy(s) of their photograph.
    • Candidates should also pay the requisite application fee through demand draft and provide the details of the demand draft as indicated in the application form.
    • After filling the form, the candidates should take prints of the
      • candidate copy of the completed application form, which will be treated as admit card.
      • office copy has to be submitted to the invigilator(s) with the demand draft in the examination hall.
    • The candidate should bring the candidate copy and the office copy at the examination hall and he/she has to sign the copies with the declaration in front of the invigilator(s) in the examination hall. The candidate copy is to be retained by the applicant for future reference and admission.
    Note: Candidtes will not be allowed to sit for the examination under the following circumstances.
    • Incomplete/hand filled in application form,
    • Not having the hard copy of the candidate copy and the office copy of the form.
    • Not having valid bank demand draft with details as stated in the application form.
  • Application Fee details :
    • Applicants need to pay Rs. 500/- (Rs. 250/- for the SC / ST / Differently abled candidates) through Demand Draft drawn in favour of "The Registrar, IIEST, Shibpur" from any nationalized bank payable at Kolkata.
    • The transaction details should be provided by the candidate in the application form.
  • Test :
    • An admission test shall be conducted for all eligible candidates. The duration of the test will be one hour following MCQ pattern with 100 marks, out of which 70% questions will be from the subject area, 20% questions will test the analytical ability and 10% proficiency in English. In the test each question will carry 2(two) mark for correct answer, zero if not attempted and a negative mark of 0.5 for each incorrect answer. Any fuzziness in chosssing the answer or multiple selections etc. leads to an award of 0.5 negative mark for that question.
    • The questions will be set as per the national standard for graduate level in the respective branch.
    • The cut-off marks, in any circumstances, for a qualifying candidate to be called for the interview will not be less than 25% of the total marks.
    • Any unforeseen issue arising out of the process will be resolved by the institute within its provisions and its decision in all such matters will be final and binding.
  • Syllabus :
    In general, the syllabus for the Engineering, Architecture, Town and Regional Planning department will be the same as GATE and for Science departments, the syllabus will be the same as NET/GATE examinations. However, the syllabus for some of the departments having specific requirements can be found in Appendix I.
  • Interview :
    The interview will be held in the respective Department/School/Centers and interaction would be based on the general and broad area of the respective branch along with the area of research interest of the aspirants.

    NOTE: The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has agreed to support 5 fellowships in the JRF/SRF position for the PhD programme.
  • Test
    • An admission test shall be conducted for all eligible candidates.
