Master of Social Work

Vidyasagar School of Social Work conducts 2 year full time Masters degree in Social Work (MSW) under the Vidyasagar University. Additionally the course is also recognized under Section 2(f) of UGC Act. Over the years, the MSW course of VSSW has emerged as a much sought after course in the field of professional social work. The placement record of the Institute has been excellent and every year all the students are absorbed in various Government departments, reputed NGOs, funding organizations, micro-finance institutions and other organizations. The placement cell of the Institute actively monitors the placement of the subsequent job opportunities even after passing out of the Institution.

The programme of the MSW fourteen theoretical papers, field work, viva voce and and project report. The entire curriculum has been designed in a way to promote integration of theory and practice in the field of social welfare and social policy.

Diploma in Social Work

The Institute conducts a one year Diploma in Social Work (DSW) with a view to develop a steady pool of effective human resource with basic theoretical knowledge and practical understanding of various issues needed in the field of social work and development. The course curriculum imparts the fundamental theories of social development as well as takes due care to sensitize a social worker/prospective social worker on the basic tenets of human values and ethical developmental paradigm. The DSW course was started by the Institute way back in 1980 and has been retained in view of its demand amongst the workers engaged in various fields of social work.

Although any candidate with a bachelor's degree from any recognized university can apply for this programme, preference is given to candidates working in NGOs/Govt. departments/industry etc. The admission to the course is made through a written test followed by a personal interview. The diploma is awarded by Jayaprakash Institute of Social Change.

PG Diploma in Psychological Counselling

Vidyasagar School of Social Work has been aware and responsive to different social problems arising out of multi-faceted social change. In the recent past it has been observed that individual and communities have started experiencing complex mental problems unknown and unnoticed beforehand. The increased frequency of these problems is threatening the very fabric of the society due to lack of proper intervention process both curative as well as prophylactic. With several years of successful running the Masters degree programme in Social Work, the Institute has understood that one of the key hurdles remains the lack of properly trained professionals in counselling in the backdrop of the magnitude and multi-dimensional nature of the problem. In view of this, the Vidyasagar School of Social Work has started a one year PG Diploma in Psychological Counselling (evening programme) recognized by the Vidyasagar University. The objective of the course is to provide a high standard of professional education to the trainees to enable them to become competent, effective and resourceful practitioners and also to enable them apply psychological knowledge to the practice of the counselling psychology.

The faculties comprise senior level practitioners, university lecturers, experts on community medicine and health and eminent behavioural scientists. There is a full-fledged psychological laboratory with a rich resource of testing materials.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria


Master of Social Work

The following students are allowed to satisfy the eligibility for applying to the MSW course: P.G. or Hons. Graduate (full time course) in Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, Anthropology, Commerce & Human Development or any Hons. Graduate with any one of the above subjects as Pass subject or passed BSW, DSW or LlB.

One third of the total seats are reserved for the students of Vidyasagar University. 15% of the seats are booked for SC and 7.5% of the seats are booked for ST candidates provided they fulfill the eligibility and selection requirements. 5 seats are reserved for candidates sponsored by various state departments. However the seats may be filled up by General Candidates if the reserved quota remains unfulfilled.

Application for admission must be made in prescribed format along with the necessary documents. Details about admission forms can be obtained here. Those satisfying the the eligibility requirements would be called for written test and interview by the selection committee. The list of the selected candidates would be notified in the Notice Board of the Institute shortly after the admission test.

Vidyasagar School of Social Work (VSSW) was started by Jayaprakash Institute of Social Change in the year 1984 with the objective of creating a pool of trained social workers to serve the NGOs and various development organizations as well as impart professional ethics and values to the gradually emerging field of social welfare. The two year post graduate diploma programme that started in 1985 subsequently gained recognition of the Vidyasagar University as Masters Degree Course in Social Work (MSW). Consequently, the School was named as Vidyasagar School of Social Work (VSSW) under the auspices of Jayaprakash Institute of Social Change.

The main objectives of VSSW are to provide professional training in social work based on approach to applied social sciences and social action while developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and values appropriate to the social work profession.

The activities of the School have been designed towards promoting integration of theory and practice in the fields of social welfare and social policy. For this reason it stresses on social research, block placement of students in reputed NGOs/Govt. agencies etc to develop the knowledge learnt in classroom in actual workplace while making significant contribution in formulation of social policies.
