Post Graduate Programs

The College offers two Post Graduate courses under Delhi University. These are

  • Master of Arts - English
  • Master of Arts - Hindi

The intensive curriculum of the post graduate programs prepares students for taking up research and teaching and also for other opportunities.

Students seeking admission to the post graduate programs have to apply directly to the University of Delhi. Classes for post graduate programs are held in the university. Tutorial classes are held in the college.


CENTRE FOR IGNOU

Jesus and Mary College is assigned as the study centre No 0713 for IGNOU. There are approximately 2200 students assigned to this Centre. The Centre provides counseling on Sunday between 8:30 am and 1:30 pm for the following courses:

Certificate Programs

Admission on first come first serve basis

DURATION : 6 months

The College offers a few popular job-oriented Certificate Courses. These Courses are optional and do not form part of the university curriculum. The courses which are held after colleges hours enables students to achieve vocational qualifications along with their Under Graduate degree. This gives them a head start in the competitive world today. The programs offered include:

Media studies (R.K Films and Media Academy)
Advertising and Marketing Communications
Camera and Photography

Admission Criteria

In the following para's we define the overall admission criteria and the admission criteria for each of the departments


General Rules applicable to all departments

Admissions will be on merit and on basis of the aggregate marks obtained by the applicant in class XII. Aggregate marks will be calculated on the basis of best four academic subjects including English.

If the subject for which the student has applied is not included in the best of four then a disadvantage of 2.5% is given ( except Commerce and English).

In case a candidate has not studied three academic subjects then a disadvantage (minus) of 2.5% of the maximum marks may be levied on each of the non academic subjects to be included for the calculation of best of four percentage.


Additional requirement for different courses

B.Com (Hons.)

  • Mathematics is compulsory for B. Com (Hons)
  • For B.Com (Hons) and B.Com (Programme) a disadvantage (minus) of 5% from Best of four percentage for students of Science and Humanities stream.

B.Com

  • A disadvantage (minus) of 5% from Best of four percentage for students of Science and Humanities stream.

Department of Economics

  • Maths should be a compulsory subject in class XII
  • Minimum marks in Maths to be 70%

Department of English

  • Minimum 90% in Core English or 92% in Functional English or 88% in Elective English.
  • If a candidate has Core and Elective English then both may be counted in the best four subjects. In such cases the core score will be taken for the language requirement and the Elective marks will be considered as one of the other three subjects.
  • Preference will be given to students from Humanities and Science stream.

Department of Hindi

  • Hindi and English compulsory upto XII
  • Need to have pass marks in English in Class XII
  • Minimum marks in Hindi 60% : Aggregate 55%

Department of Mathematics

  • Minimum 80% in best four subjects including Maths and English.
  • Minimum 80% in Mathematics in class XII

    Other than the great location, the college has excellent infrastructure to recommend it; The landscaped college grounds are widely admired.

    JMC has an old library with a huge collection of books divided on three floors. A unique feature, which no other college under Delhi University provides, is an inhouse gymnasium. The gymnasium is open to membership for only students and staff of JMC. The college, which is also known for its psychology course, has a well-equipped lab. Also set in the grounds is an amphitheatre. In addition, there are hockey, cricket, lawn tennis, football and basketball fields.
  • »  Library
    The Jesus and Mary College library provides access to students to a wide range of scholarly journals and books, growing digital media collections and other printed materials to support research and learning.

    The Library is housed in a three-floor building. The well-organised, expertly maintained, fully computerized library has approx. 50,000 books and bound journals, total sitting capacity of about 180 (with provision for adding more), reading halls on all the floors and cubicles for the faculty on the 1st floor. It has been organised as follows:
    • The ground floor of the library has circulation counter, Online Public Access Catalogue and Processing Section and Stacks.
    • The first floor has the Text-Book Section, Reference-Section, Book-Bank, Periodical Section and Internet-Centre for the Faculty.
    • The second floor is dedicated to the bound journals (back-volumes)/Internet-Centre for the students and "Counselling-Cell"
  • »  Sports Facilities
    The College provides many facilities for sporting activities within its 15 acre campus. There are provisions and equipments for more than 10 different sports. It is therefore no surprise that Jesus and Mary College has for many years won accolades for sporting events within the University. Its students have participated in National and International events and won prizes.

    The campus has fields and facilities for a number of Sports including the following:

  • »  Multi Purpose Hall
    The large Multi purpose building and hall within the College Campus was inaugurated in 2006 and blessed by Archbishop Vincent Concessao.

    The building has an auditorium and an area for indoor games. In the basement of the Hall are seminar rooms and a fully equipped Computer Laboratory.

    The hall is used for various cultural activities and indoor games. College events and Student activities are hosted in the hall.
  • »  Laboratories
    The College has well equipped laboratories for course related practical work.

    There are three laboratories within the College:
    • Psychology Lab: The department has two large well ventilated rooms 209 and 210 that serve as labs. In addition to the various apparatus and tests required as part of the curriculum the labs have OHPs, Laptop with LCD projection, a computer (more to the added soon) , white boards etc. The labs are managed by lab assistant.
    • Computer Lab: The college has a state of the art, air conditioned computer lab which has sixty computers, connected through LAN and Internet. The lab also provides printing facilities to the students. It is fully equipped with audio visual teaching aids, including LCD projector etc
    • B.EL.ED Lab: The Department of elementary education houses a well equipped laboratory for practicals to be conducted by the students
  • »  Gymnasium
    College has a well furnished Gymnasium with the latest machines and exercise equipment. Membership is open to all students of Jesus and Mary College.

    The Gym is not open to outsiders.

    Trained Instructors are available for assistance, guidance and training.

    The in house Gym is a popular spot for students who cannot otherwise access such facilities. Students are encouraged to use the facility when on the campus during their spare time between classes.

    Jesus and Mary is probably the only Delhi University College that provides this facility.

    The Gym is a popular spot for both sports enthusiasts and the health conscious.

Jesus and Mary College was founded in July 1968 as a constituent college of the University of Delhi. The College opened with one department offering English (Hons) and B.A.(Pass) Courses with an enrolment of 116 students. The Staff consisted of Sr. M. Peter Claver as Principal, Sr. Magdalen, Lecturer and Head of Department of English and seven lady Lecturers. Sr. M. Stanislaus acted as cashier and there were two clerks, two office assistants and a Librarian. Fr. T. Mathias S.J. was the first Chairman of the Governing Body of the College.

The aim of Jesus and Mary College is to make God known and loved by means of Christian education to all social milieu in keeping with the preference which St. Claudine had for the young and the poor. The College offers an integrated and all round education-intellectual, cultural, social, emotional, physical, aesthetic, moral and spiritual.

The year 1970-71 started with affiliation to the NSS. The general objective of NSS is the enrichment of students personality through community service, and students have been encouraged to develop a social conscience through this scheme.

Sr. Aquinas Vigas , Principal of Jesus and Mary College from 1972 till Oct. 1977 was a woman of much intellectual ability and very strong will power.

3rd February is the Feast of St. Claudine Thevenet, the Foundress of Jesus and Mary Congregation and the year 2000 - the year of Christ, is the Jubilee of his birth. 3rd February, 2000 was thus a very special day in the history of Jesus and Mary College. The road in front of the College was named as JESUS AND MARY COLLEGE MARG. Mrs. Sheila Dixit, Chief Minister of Delhi graced the occasion. His Grace Alan de Lastic, Archbishop of Delhi blessed the road and each one present there.

The Multi Purpose Hall – was a long cherished dream of all at JMC. Much hard work and effort has gone into its completion. We are proud of this accomplishment – a dream come true in the history of Jesus and Mary College. It was inaugurated in 2006 and blessed by Archbishop Vincent Concessao. The facilities offered are an auditorium, an area for indoor games, computer laboratory and seminar / conference rooms.

Today the Jesus and Mary College caters to 2500 students – 10 Honours programs and B.A. Restructured program with 13 subject combinations and Post graduation programs in English and Hindi.
