D S Kothari Centre

The DSK Centre for Research and Innovation in Science Education is devoted to promoting creativity and excellence in science with special focus on attracting young students to careers in science and nurturing their innate talent. It aims to act as a nodal centre which will provide easy access to resources for undertaking innovative and inspiring science activities designed to give an early exposure to the scientific process and the joys of discovery. The programs are informed by rigorous science education research, results of cognitive studies on students learning and pedagogic tools established to be effective. Special emphasis is on adopting multi-representational and multidisciplinary approach to science learning in contemporary contexts and integrating the use of cutting-edge educational tools and technologies to provide the best possible environment for exploratory work.

Auditorium

The Miranda House auditorium offers a stage to its young students to perfect their talent, communication and performing skills. It has been witness to many famous events and has provided a forum to many burgeoning artists. It is the hub centre of all cultural activities and mega events in the college. Designed to seat as many as 450 students, it has recently been renovated and has installed a state-of-art audio system in addition to stage lighting arrangements and a control room for facilitating recording and multimedia projections.

These well equipped laboratories are the touchstone of the science teaching programmes as they act as the nodal points for experiential learning and empirical investigations. It is here that the students team up to learn by doing; discover how various physical systems behave; and observe a variety of natural phenomena thereby consolidating their understanding of abstract scientific concepts.

Computer Based Labs

Miranda House has established a Multidisciplinary Computer-based Laboratory wherein real world experiments are interfaced to computers which is used for measurement and control. The equipment hardware and software has been developed indigenously by some of the faculty members in a project cal Science Online, funded by the University Grants Commission and the Department of Science Technology. This is a unique laboratory that provides the facilities for real-time measurement and control of a comprehensive range of physical quantities of interest in physics, chemistry, biology, human biology, earth sciences etc. The data-acquisition cards and sensor, transducer circuits have been developed in-house working with students on projects. These state-of-art setups can be put to multidisciplinary use and give the student an opportunity to learn in diverse contexts. The laboratory also stocks a vast collection of equipment and software developed by leading curriculum developers and Education Research Groups from across the world. The collection of experiments and visualization tools enhances conceptual understanding of complex scientific principles and simultaneously provides an exposure to the state-of-art.

Project Labs

Project Work is a mandatory part of regular courses such as the B. Sc. Honours in Physics. Miranda House is well known for the innovativeness and quality of the projects carried out by its students. These projects provide the student an opportunity to learn in diverse and multidisciplinary contexts. All students are encouraged to carry out innovative and often research-based investigative projects, working in an ambience that is enriching and without the constraints or limitations of traditional curriculum. Special efforts ensure that the student gets an exposure to the best practicesand becomes adept at handling laboratory techniques ranging from the simplest to the most sophisticated.

Workshop Facilities

The Physics Department maintains a small workshop facility for mechanical and electrical work in addition to that for electronic instrumentation. This allows in-house facilities for repair and maintenance of equipment and also fabrication of new experimental setups. The students working on projects are encouraged to make use of this facility, learn practical skills useful in everyday life in a technologically driven workplace, gain confidence in the use of their own hands, undertake fabrication and construction of the instruments and devices they design.

Science Museum

The Life Science Departments maintain the Botany and Zoology Science Museums which house a comprehensive collection of preserved specimens of flora and fauna, biological samples, slides and other resource materials. The collection has been built up painstakingly over several decades and is well maintained by the curator devoted to this task. The museum also preserves specimens collected by students and faculty members on field trips and excursions from diverse and exotic locations across the country. The exhibits and samples provide depth and range to learning in the laboratory.

Placement Cell

The college also runs a successful placement cell. A regular bulletin of information about various opportunities is posted on the college notice board. Career counselling, interactions with experts, presentations by outside agencies and alumni are all a part of this process wherein the student is helped in taking a decision about what to do next. Located in the University campus, Miranda House is built in warm red brick with cool and spacious corridors. Its original design was by the renowned architect Walter George, the college shares an architectural affinity with other colonial educational institutions of the country. In the past five decades, as the college has grown, several other buildings have been added to its original design. It is now declared a heritage building and work is on to maintain its pristine glory.

Miranda offers liberal education in humanities and science to more than 2500 students. The faculty is renowned for their meritorious profile, versatile talent and dedication to the cause of education. The college has produced women who have excelled in various professions and have contributed in numerous ways to society at large.

The college has always maintained high academic standards.
