M.SC.

Mumbai University post-graduate degree courses (MSc) are conducted by the departments of Life Sciences (with specialization in Neurobiology); Microbiology, Biochemistry and Chemistry (with specialization in Analytical Chemistry). Laboratory facilities are recognised for post-graduate studies by research as well, and have received infra-structural support from the Department of Science and Technology and the UGC.



POST-GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN CLINICAL ANALYSIS (DCA)

Sophia College DCA is a post-graduate programme in Medical Technology, open to all BSc and MSc students majoring in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Life Science, Zoology and Chemistry. Inaugurated in 1978, it is a year's programme with clinical rotations and internships in Mumbai's premier hospitals.

Besides 11 Medical Technology related subjects, there are extra credit courses in English, Mathematics and, from the academic year 1998, three new credit courses have been introduced. They are Computers, Sales Management and Laboratory Management.

Sophia DCA is also recognized as the 16th year of education in most universities abroad. The career opportunities offered by such a programme range from a job as a bench technologist to a post in sales and management to a future in research and development.



POST-GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN LABORATORY MANAGEMENT (DLM)

Medical practice is becoming more professional and needs trained managers to deliver quality services.

Laboratory management deals with different types of Quality Control and Quality assurance programmes and statistical data that has to be upgraded every day and compared.

This programme will give the world of laboratory sciences personnel that are empowered to implement such quality programmes as are needed to run top-of-the-line accredited laboratories.



POST-GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN “QUALITY ASSURANCE IN THE ‘FOODS/PHARMACEUTICALS’ INDUSTRY” (QA)

This is a one-and-a-half year full-time autonomous course in collaboration with various Food and Pharmaceutical Industries. It was inaugurated in 1993. The curriculum includes the basic elements of Quality Assurance, using the “Systems” approach as it applies to industry, starting with raw materials, through the stages of on-line production and packaging, to finished products and legislation. Emphasis is placed on an indus¬trial orientation, together with laboratory skills and techniques required in industry.

The course spans four semesters and includes input by guest lecturers from industry and experimental work at analytical laborato¬ries in the city, followed by an eight-week apprenticeship period each in a ‘foods’ and ‘pharmaceuticals’ company. Students are groomed through self-study and communication skills. It is open on merit to both men and women who have a BSc degree and fulfil all the required criteria. They must have a good basic understanding of Chemistry, Microbiology, Life Sciences and Biochemistry.

An ADD-ON CAREER ORIENTED CERTIFICATE COURSE IN BIO INFORMATICS

A UGC Sponsored and Mumbai University Recognized

Bioinformatics is a field of science in which biology, computer science and information technology merge into a single discipline.
This course introduces the students to Bioinformatics, which uses computer databases to store, retrieve and assist in understanding biological information. Genome-scale sequencing projects have led to an explosion of genetic sequences available for automated analysis. The students will be shown how these sequences can help achieve better description and understanding of biological processes, disease, and contribute to the time and cost effectiveness of biological experimentation. Hands-on sessions will familiarize students with the details and use of the most commonly used online tools and resources. The course will cover the use of NCBI's Entrez, BLAST, PSI-BLAST, ClustalW, the PDB and a lot more! An introduction to database design and the principles of programming languages will be provided.

  • Students who pass the S.S.C Examination conducted by the Maharashtra Board are eligible to join the F.Y.J.C. Arts / Vocational / Science Courses.
  • Students who pass the I.C.S.E. / C.B.S.E. / N.O.S. or any other qualifying examination from any Board / University other than Maharashtra Board should obtain the Eligibility Form from the Maharashra State Board of Secondary & Higher Secondary Education, Mumbai Divisional Board, Plot No.27 & 28, Sector No.16A, Vashi, Navi Mumbai 400703, before seeking admission to the College.
  • Christian minorities students can apply directly to the college. Others have to apply online.

SENIOR COLLEGE (Admission Information)

  • Students who pass the H.S.C., I.S.C., C.B.S.E., or any other qualifying examination from any Board/University other than Maharashtra Board should obtain the “provisional Eligibility Certificate” from the Registrar, University of Mumbai, Mumbai-400098, before seeking admission to the College.
  • For the purpose of confirmation of eligibility for admission to the University, students must submit the following certificates in the original along with Xerox copies of the same, to the College Office after they have obtained admission to the college:

HOSTEL

Sophia College offers efficient, well-managed and clean hostel accommodation to about a hundred and five out-of-town students. The hostel is located on the first floor of the main building and the topmost floor of the rear extension. It is truly a home away from home, where each student receives personal attention and is encouraged not only to develop her academic skills but also to become a well-balanced and caring person. Participation in extra-curricular activities is expected, so that students realize that the learning process goes beyond academic study.

CAMPUS

A green oasis in the heart of a congested metropolis, the College has well-designed, airy buildings set around a beautiful central lawn, a terraced garden and a herbal garden. The main building, which is a heritage structure, has been enlarged over the years to accommodate lecture halls, library and an audio-visual room.

CANTEEN

The focal point of much student activity is the canteen. It is here that students can relax, chat, laugh, share experiences and lecture notes over a cup of tea. The canteen is conveniently located next to the herbal garden with easy access from all the buildings of the campus. It has a large seating area and is run by professional caterers. A variety of snacks, mini-meals and beverages are available at reasonable rates. Vending machines for tea, coffee and snacks are also located in the canteen.

GYMKHANA

The gymkhana offers opportunities to both Junior and Senior College students to play indoor and outdoor games. Carom, chess and table tennis can be played in the basement of the main building. A badminton court is located in the shed and there are volleyball and basketball courts on the campus. Football and swimming are encouraged and off-campus arrangements are made for these activities. Throwball, tennis and cricket are also popular. Hiking and adventure camps attract many participants. Students are coached to compete in intercollegiate, state and national events.

UNION COMMITTEE

Student representatives comprising of Club secretaries, Class representatives and co-opted members, headed by the Student Body President (S.B.P.) form the College Union. The Constitution of the Sophia College Union Committee is available for reference with the Dean of Students. The C.U.C. is responsible for all the student activities of the College. C.U.C. members are given training in leadership skills and in working as a team.

LIBRARY

The hub of academic life is the library, which houses a large collection of books (fiction and non-fiction), journals (both national and international), biographies, encyclopaedias, dictionaries, art books and maps. Audio-visual materials, such as CD-ROMs, DVDs, slides and filmstrips, are also available. With airy, well-lit reading areas, browsing corners, and separate carrels for staff. A separate Reference Room where reference books are stocked and users can pursue their reference work peacefully. The library is aesthetically decorated with pictures and artifacts. The library staff is helpful and approachable. The open access system is user-friendly. The library follows the Dewey Decimal Classification system 23 rd edition. The library uses SLIM 21 software for all its information management. Article indexing from newspapers and journals subscribed to by the library, and catalogue search, have both been computerized. The library awards The St. Madeleine Sophie prize to the most well-read student of the year.

COMPUTER CENTER

The Computer Centre (Sophia – M.K.Tata Communications Technology Centre)

Located on the 1st Floor, Arts Building, the Computer Centre is well equipped with 93 computers, 4 printers, 2 scanners and DVD writers in all the computers. An internet Tri-Band connection is available at a nominal fee. Staff and students can use the Computer Center facilities for both academic and personal work.

SCIENCE LABORATORY

On working days all laboratories will be open from 8 a.m. to 4.00p.m.

Sophia College, founded in 1941, is affiliated to the University of Mumbai. The Governing Body of the Society for the Higher Education of Women in India runs the College. The Religious Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and lay staff form the staff of the College.

The Society of the Sacred Heart was founded in France in 1800, by St. Madeleine Sophie Barat. It is dedicated mainly to the all-round education of youth. There are now a number of schools and colleges of the Society all over the world, besides widespread innovative non-formal involvements. According to a long-standing tradition, the staff takes a personal interest in the harmonious growth of each student entrusted to their care.
