NOTIFICATION

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is expected to hold the CBSE Class 12 board exam 2021 from July 15 to August 26. Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal will announce the exam date and format on June 1.
  • A high-level meeting was held yesterday with the education ministers of all the states to discuss the possibility of the CBSE, CISCE, states board exams and other entrance exams in light of the second wave of Covid-19.
  • CBSE has proposed that the Class 12 board exam 2021 may be held between July 15 and August 26 and the result will be declared in September.

Two options of CBSE board exam 2021

  • CBSE proposed that the board exams be held on certain major subjects only or that the duration reduced to 1.5 hours instead of 3 hours. Most ministers in yesterdays meeting supported the latter option. However, some called for a mix of both options.
  • For the second option, a 1.5-hour or 90-minute exam would have a different exam pattern. There would only be MCQ questions so students can complete the exam in the given time.
  • This would be conducted in the students own schools and they would need to appear for one language subject and three electives, a source told PTI.
  • A tentative timeline for the exams says that it would be held in two phases Phase 1 from July 15 to August 1, and Phase 2 from August 6 to August 26.
  • It was proposed that the exams be held on Sundays as well.

Plan B from CBSE

  • As a separate Plan B, CBSE suggested that students can be given an option appear for the CBSE board exam 2021 around 15 days later if they are initially unable to appear due to any Covid-19 related issue.
  • However, we do not know if this option will be taken up until June 1 when Pokhriyal will announce a final decision on the exam dates and format.
  • CBSE board exam 2021 to be held with all precautions
  • Just like last year, this year as well, the CBSE board exam 2021 will be held with all Covid-19 safety protocols in place. Social distancing and other norms would be followed.
  • Meanwhile a large section of students, parents and teachers have been calling for a cancellation of the CBSE board exam 2021 on social media.
  • However, Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal said, “Both students’ and teachers’ safety, security, and future are supremely important to us."

Opposition from Delhi and Maharashtra

  • The options for holding the CBSE board exams were discussed at the high-level meeting on Sunday and thought most agreed to the 90-minute exam route, Delhi and Maharashtra were completely against the idea of holding the exams amidst the pandemic.
  • Pokhriyal has given sates, especially those in disagreement, time till May 25 to submit their detailed proposals.
  • Delhi Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Manish Sisodia said, “The stubbornness to organize exams by playing with the safety of the children will prove to be a big mistake and a failure.”
  • He demanded that students be vaccinated before they can appear for the board exams. He suggested that either Pfizer (whose vaccine of kids has been accepted by several countries) should be consulted or should give our own vaccine to kids after consulting with experts considering they are 17.5 years old and only months away from 18.
  • This is because people who have attained the age of 18 and above are eligible to get vaccinated in India.
  • Maharashtra State School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad said, “Health and mental well-being of children, their families must be our priority. Students, parents have been sharing their concerns regarding sitting for exams amid the pandemic”
  • “Since most professional courses hold entrance exams for admissions, many experts are of the view that it is possible to evaluate the performance of a class 12th student based on a retroactive assessment model,” she added.
