Higher secondary examination dates prompt colleges

  • The Supreme Court of India is all set to hear the plea filed for the cancellation of offline CBSE and ICSE Class 12 board exams 2021 today, May 31. The hearing was earlier scheduled for May 28 but the matter was adjourned by the court till Monday.
  • Till now, the Central Board of Secondary Education has not taken any final decision regarding the postponement or cancellation of the Class 12 board exams. However, students across the country are urging the government to cancel the exams this year.
  • A bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari will be hearing the plea filed by Advocate Mamata Sharma today, May 31, at 11 am. A copy of the plea has also been provided to CBSE and ICSE for further review in the matter.
  • Another plea filed by a Kerala school teacher will also be considered in the Supreme Court after todays hearing. The teachers plea has urged the court not to cancel the Class 12 board exams as it can have a negative impact on the future of the students.

What does the plea demand?

  • The plea filed by Advocate Mamata Sharma in the Supreme Court demands the cancellation of the upcoming CBSE and ICSE Class 12 board exams in view of the current Covid-19 pandemic, as conducting the exams can put the students at risk.
  • The plea further asks both the national boards to consider an objective methodology in the exams and think of alternative evaluation methods for this year, as due to the second wave of the pandemic, many students have not been able to concentrate on their studies.
  • On Friday, the Supreme Court had deferred the matter further as the final decision regarding the conduction of the CBSE Class 12 board exams 2021 will be announced by the central government by tomorrow, June 1, giving the students some clarity.
  • Many alternative examination formats are currently being considered by CBSE and ICSE regarding the conduction of the board exams. They have been considering shorter durations for the papers and an objective format, but no decision has been announced yet.
