Send ISC students XI, XII marks, says CISCE

  • The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) on Friday asked its affiliated schools to send this years ISC examinees scores in all tests held in classes XI and XII by June 7. The move, principals said, was in keeping with the councils recent decision to continually evaluate students so that in the event of its inability to hold board exams the scores could be used to prepare their marksheets.
  • The council on April 20 had announced the postponement of ISC exams, which were slated to begin from May 4, and had said it would monitor the Covid situation and take a final call by the first week of June. It had also announced the cancellation of Class X board exams. We have been instructed that the papers or subjects for which average marks are sent in percentage format should tally with the subjects for which students have been registered for ISC, said a principal, adding the council had also asked for these students consolidated marksheet in classes XI and XII from school records to validate the uploaded scores. Each principal is required to authenticate the marks. The process will be online.
  • There are complications with the marks though as some CISCE-affiliated schools held the selection tests online and some offline. The marks being sent to the council will vary. CISCE will draw up a formula to bring parity, a principal said.
  • At a meeting with school heads on May 10, CISCE said classes IX to XI students would be evaluated throughout the year and marks scored in the exams and projects including unit tests, half yearly and annual exams would be tabulated by both CISCE and schools. That would help the council compute marksheets, should ICSE and ISC exams get cancelled.
  • Sources said the councils notification might have been prompted by requests from guardians for a provisional marksheet to meet the August 1 deadline of foreign universities. As ISC results are unlikely to be ready by then, it is a major concern for students who want to study abroad. They approached principals, who requested the council to arrange for provisional marksheets. This may have led to the CISCE notice, said a principal.
  • Holding the board exams online is unlikely owing to weak internet connections. It is absurd to imagine all students will have the infrastructure to take online exams because unlike the Bengal government, the council did not distribute tabs, explained a teacher.
  • Other boards have announced plans to hold the exams later. “CBSE, in its proposal to the education ministry, said they wanted to either hold Class XII boards for major subjects later or curtail the duration of tests. The council has not yet made any such submission, though it may take a similar decision,” said another principal.
  • The state board on Thursday said Madhyamik (X) and Higher Secondary (XII) exams would be held in the second week of August and July last week.
