    + Eligibility Criteria

    Candidates are eligible to apply for the PhD program if they fulfil the following criteria:
    A 1-year/2-semester master's degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 60% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed
    or
    A professional qualification (completed) such as CA (ICAI), ICWA, CS with a Bachelor's degree with at least 60 percent marks.
    or
    A 4-year/8-semester Bachelor's degree with equivalent of 75 percent marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed.

    These criteria are higher than the minimum threshold suggested by UGC guidelines on "Minimum Standards for Ph.D. admissions" as of November 7th, 2022, to ensure consistency with the minimum eligibility criteria of pre-PhD qualifications for the role of Assistant Professor at IIMs.

    The Master's degree or equivalent qualification/Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification required for IIM PhD eligibility should be: (a) from any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956; or (b) recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India or (c) possess an equivalent qualification from an institution approved by AICTE. The Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification obtained by the candidate must entail a minimum of three years of education after completing Higher Secondary schooling (10+2) or equivalent.

    Final year candidates who have not yet completed their respective degrees (Bachelor's or Master's) by the date application is due are eligible to apply for IIM PhD program at IIM Udaipur and can receive provisional acceptance. According to IIM PhD criteria, with their initial application, they must submit a bonafide certificate (on the day of registration) signed by the head of their current department/institution indicating that they have completed all examinations/submissions required for obtaining the degree. No later than December 30th, of the year of application, they must submit the final mark sheets/certificates related to the completion of the degree indicating the minimum cut-off has been met.

    Valid CAT/GMAT/GRE/NET-JRF (relevant disciple) scores are mandatory for the candidates applying for Marketing, OBHRM, and Finance & Accounting Areas.

    IIM Udaipur offers Ph.D. in five areas. Please note that a candidate can apply to only one area out of the five areas mentioned below. In the case where candidates submit multiple applications in more than one area, the application received on the latest date will be considered and the previous application/applications will be summarily rejected.

    + Decision Sciences

    IIMU’s PhD program in Decision Sciences prioritizes the development of researchers oriented toward business applications research through a quantitative lens. The program aims to prepare students for careers in academia as well as in practice (government, non-profits, think tanks, or other organizations) that call for research and analytical capabilities. The PhD scholars will get training in various aspects of decision sciences with a primary focus on management applications, built upon three pillars of business school research – Information Systems, Statistics, and Operations Research. Areas of concentration may be chosen by scholars as per their preferences.
    • Eligibility Criteria
      • Candidates are eligible to apply for the PhD program if they fulfil the following criteria:

      • There shall be 2 stages in the selection process for Decision Sciences Area:
        Stage 1: Screening of Applications
        Stage 2: Research Aptitude Test + Personal Interview

        Screening of Applications:
        After screening of all applicants, only shortlisted applicants shall be called upon in person for Research Aptitude Test and Personal Interview.

    + Finance & Accounting

    The PhD Program in Finance and Accounting Area at IIM Udaipur aims to equip its students with relevant tools for an impactful career as researchers and teachers at top-tier management schools in India and abroad. During the program, students go through a thoughtfully curated list of research methods and topical research seminar courses in finance, followed by a guided thesis development phase. The area’s research spans topics such as climate finance, corporate governance, corporate finance, market microstructure, asset pricing, and accounting quality.
    • Eligibility Criteria
      • Candidates are eligible to apply for the PhD program if they fulfil the following criteria:
        A 1-year/2-semester master's degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 60% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed

        Guidelines for Statement of Purpose (SOP) for Finance & Accounting Area
        • The candidate should address the following questions in not more than 500 words in their SOPs-
          • Why do you want to pursue a PhD in Finance & Accounting? Why a PhD from IIMU?
          • State your research interest(s). Explain what research you would want to do. Why? Please note you may or may not be pursuing this research interest if you get selected.
          • What are your future research and career goals?
        • Please note the following additional requirements-
          • Don’t just write your SOP in a simple question-answer format. Rather, share with us a compelling narrative (in the form of a coherent essay), clearly explaining your purpose for applying for a PhD in Finance & Accounting at IIMU.
          • Your SOP will undergo a plagiarism check. If the SOP is found to be plagiarised, your application will be rejected by default.

    • Selection Process
      • The selection process will be a two-stage process.
        In Stage 1, faculty members from the area (or a panel thereof) will make a shortlist of applicants found suitable for Stage 2 based on an assessment of the applicant’s academic performance, research/ work experience, letters of recommendation, and statement of purpose. Only the shortlisted candidates will be eligible to appear in stage 2 of the process.

        In Stage 2, faculty members (or a panel thereof) from the Area will judge the suitability of applicants through in-person interviews at IIMU Campus. In the interviews, the candidates will be evaluated on their research aptitude and domain knowledge, motivation and preparedness for the Ph.D. program, long-term career plans, and communication skills. The research aptitude might be evaluated based on research papers assigned by the panel to the candidates at least 7 days prior to the date of the interview.

    + Operations Management

    The Operations Management (OM) Area is a division within the OMQMIS Area at IIM Udaipur (IIMU) and offers its own PhD program. Begun in 2017, the OM PhD was the second PhD program to have been offered at IIMU. The OM PhD program at IIMU offers students the chance to pursue their doctoral studies in a wide gamut of interest areas related to Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Operations Management using a variety of analytical and empirical methodologies.
    • Eligibility Criteria
      • Candidates are eligible to apply for the PhD program if they fulfil the following criteria:

    • Selection Process
      • Stage 1: Shortlisting:
        • All eligible applications will be reviewed, and a shortlist will be prepared. Only the shortlisted candidates will be offered to participate in the Stage 2 process.
      • Preparation for Stage 2:
        • Only the applicants shortlisted at Stage 1 will be invited to write the Mathematical Proficiency Examination (MPE). The syllabus is stated below.
        • Two research papers will be provided. Each shortlisted applicant must read BOTH research papers and try to understand them thoroughly.
        • Applicants might not be asked a single question based on the research papers before Interview Round 2 (provided they progress to the round).
        • The timing and content of questions will be entirely at the discretion of the interviewers.
      • Stage 2: Exam and Interviews:
        • This stage will have 3 rounds: Mathematical Proficiency Examination (MPE) (written), Interview Round 1, Interview Round 2.
        • All the three rounds in this stage are screening rounds, which means the following:
          - Only the candidates shortlisted after the MPE will be invited to the Interview Round 1.
          - Only the candidates shortlisted after the Interview Round 1 will be invited to the Interview Round 2.
          - The scheduling information for the Stage 2 rounds will be provided later.
      • Syllabus for the MPE:
        Mathematics
        • Algebra: Arithmetic; geometric and harmonic progressions; permutations and combinations; binomial theorem; elementary set theory; functions and relations; matrix algebra; systems of linear equations; eigenvalues and eigenvectors.
        • Calculus: Functions of single variable; limit, continuity and differentiability; mean value theorems; evaluation of definite and improper integrals; partial derivatives; total derivatives; maxima and minima. Differential equations: First order equations (linear and nonlinear); higher order linear differential equations with constant coefficients; Cauchy's and Euler's equations; initial and boundary value problems; Laplace transforms.
        Probability and Statistics
        • Descriptive statistics: Graphical representation of data (histogram, pie chart, bar chart); measures of central tendency – mean, median, mode; measures of dispersion – standard deviation, coefficient of variation.
        • Probability and random variables: Definitions of probability, conditional probability and Bayes' theorem; random variables, Poisson, normal and binomial distributions; sampling theorems.

    + Marketing

    The marketing area in IIMU is one of India's most diverse and research-active departments and was the first area to offer a PhD Program at IIMU in 2016. The Marketing PhD program at IIMU offers students the chance to pursue their doctoral studies in Consumer Behaviour, Marketing Strategy and Consumer Culture Theory. By providing rigorous training in theories from the fields of psychology, economics, sociology, anthropology and strategy, the program grooms students to develop a nuanced understanding of the micro, meso and macro aspects of consumption, markets, and brands. By offering several marketing-specific core courses and research methods courses—the students gain expertise on a wide array of quantitative and qualitative methods including experiment methods, qualitative research methods, cultural analysis, and advanced quantitative methods (analytics).
    • Eligibility Criteria
      • Candidates are eligible to apply for the PhD program if they fulfil the following criteria:

        Your statement of purpose (SOP) for applying to the PhD program in Marketing area at IIMU must include answers to the following three questions:
        • What is your motivation to pursue PhD? Why a PhD from IIM Udaipur specifically?
        • What is your career plan post PhD?
        • Are there any specific research topics (within the broad domain of Marketing) that you are interested in? What are these topics, and how has your interest developed in these specific topics?

    • Selection Process
      There shall be 4 rounds in this year’s selection process for PhD applicants in Marketing area:
      • Round 1: Screening of Applications
        The Marketing area faculty will screen the submitted application packets by the candidates, and only shortlisted candidates will be invited to participate in Round 2.
      • Round 2: Written Analysis
        The candidates will be given a simple conceptual model/framework to analyze and critique. The critiques submitted by the candidates will be evaluated on:
        • Depth of analysis
        • Writing skills
      • Round 3: Virtual Personal Interviews
        Candidates shortlisted based on their performance in round 2 will be invited for a virtual interview with a panel of Marketing area faculty (round 3).
      • Round 4: Physical Personal Interviews
        Selected candidates, those who are shortlisted based on performance in round 3, will be invited physically to IIMU campus for a final interview with the entire Marketing area faculty group (round 4).

        In both the interview rounds, the candidates will be evaluated on their research aptitude, domain knowledge, motivation and preparedness for the PhD program, long-term career plans, and communication skills.

    + Organisational Behaviour & Human Resource Management

    Students at the OBHRM area at IIMU focus on interdisciplinary work on a wide range of socially relevant issues from corporate social responsibility, entrepreneurship, leadership, and organizational governance to broad societal understandings of ethics, historical sociology, structure and agency, gender issues, and marginalization. Whether studying social inequalities or in philosophical enquiries into the meaning of work, micro, meso, or macro, a fundamental criterion for research work in this area is intellectual rigor.
    • Eligibility Criteria
      • Candidates are eligible to apply for the PhD program if they fulfil the following criteria:

        These criteria are higher than the minimum threshold suggested by UGC guidelines on "Minimum Standards for Ph.D. admissions" as of November 7th, 2022, to ensure consistency with the minimum eligibility criteria of pre-PhD qualifications for the role of Assistant Professor at IIMs.

        The Master's degree or equivalent qualification/Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification required for IIM PhD eligibility should be: (a) from any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956; or (b) recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India or (c) possess an equivalent qualification from an institution approved by AICTE. The Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification obtained by the candidate must entail a minimum of three years of education after completing Higher Secondary schooling (10+2) or equivalent.

        Final year candidates who have not yet completed their respective degrees (Bachelor's or Master's) by the date application is due are eligible to apply for IIM PhD program at IIM Udaipur and can receive provisional acceptance. According to IIM PhD criteria, with their initial application, they must submit a bonafide certificate (on the day of registration) signed by the head of their current department/institution indicating that they have completed all examinations/submissions required for obtaining the degree. No later than December 30th, of the year of application, they must submit the final mark sheets/certificates related to the completion of the degree indicating the minimum cut-off has been met.

        Valid CAT/GMAT/GATE/GRE/NET-JRF in relevant discipline. Scores are mandatory for the candidates applying to the OBHRM Area.

      • Please note that a candidate can apply to only one area. In the case where candidates submit multiple applications in more than one area, the application received on the latest date will be considered and the previous application/applications will be summarily rejected.

        • State your research interest(s). Explain what research would you want to do? Why? (300 Words). Please note you may or may not be actually pursuing this research interest if you get selected.

        Scanned copies of all academic mark sheets, certificates, qualifying examination score cards, category certificates, and research proposals must be uploaded, along with the online application form.

        ** There is no application fee for the PhD program.
    • Selection Process
      There shall be 2 stages in the selection process:
      Stage 1: Screening of Applications
      Stage 2: Personal Interview + Statement of Purpose

      Screening of Applications
      After screening of all applicants, only shortlisted applicants shall be called upon in person for Personal Interview.

      Personal Interview:
      Applicant will appear before a panel for personal interview.

    + Financial Assistance

    PhD students at IIMU receive a full fellowship that covers the cost of tuition, accommodation, other program expenses and a stipend for a living allowance. IIMU provides ample financial support to PhD students to sustain their living and research expenses and funds international exposure during the program.
    • All Ph.D. students will be provided with single accommodation (or equivalent) at no charge. Students will get shared office space on the campus.
    • A married hostel is in the planning stage and expected to be ready by 2025. Meanwhile, married students can receive a Rs. 10,000 monthly rental subsidy for off-campus housing with their families.
    • The Institute will provide various forms of financial assistance to PhD students:
      • Students will be eligible for a stipend of INR 30,000 per month in the first year with a 10% annual increment up to a maximum of five years.
      • The Institute will provide a one-time allowance of up to INR 50,000 to purchase a laptop/PC.
      • Students will be eligible for a contingency grant to purchase books, research materials, hardware, software, stationery, etc. of INR 50,000 in the first year of the program and INR 25,000 from the second year onwards until the end of the fifth year. All payments would be subject to actuals.
      • Students are eligible for research funds for conducting their dissertation-related research. An amount of up to Rs. 1,50,000 can be sought and utilized under the supervision of the advisor for this purpose.
    • IIMU encourages PhD students to attend national and international conferences/seminars to present their research papers. For this purpose, students will be eligible for a grant of INR 20,000 per year to attend national conferences/seminars, and a total of INR 2,00,000 over a period of four years to attend international conferences/seminars (outside India) subject to the acceptance of their research papers.
    • Students are also eligible to receive an additional funding of INR 2,00,000 to attend another international conference if they co-author a paper with an IIMU faculty member which gets accepted at a FT50/ IIMU A* journal list during the tenure of their PhD program.
    • Semester Abroad (Merit-based): The institute will fund an international immersion for up to two students (merit-based) in a year—enabling them to spend four months at an esteemed university abroad. The program will cover travel costs, living expenses, medical insurance (actual) and contingencies for the period. This is a unique offering in IIMU that is not currently available at any other IIM.
