Applications are invited for admission from candidates holding M.A. degree from UGC recognized universities in South & Southeast Asian Studies/AIHC/IHC/History/Political Science/Human Rights/International Relations for the Ph.D. programme 2018 in the Department of South & Southeast Asian Studies, University of Calcutta, 1, Reformatory Street, Kolkata-700027.

Candidates with 55% and above marks in MA should apply in the prescribed proforma by paying the requisite fees through a challan obtainable from any Calcutta University campus (cash counter).
- The eligible candidates will have to appear in a written examination of one hours duration to be held in this Department on 14th November, 2018 at 12:00 Noon.
- The list of successful candidates of the written examination will be displayed in the Notice Board of the Department on 19th November, 2018.
- The successful candidates will have to appear in an interview on 20th November, 2018.

The final list of successful candidates shall be put up on the notice Board of the Department. The allocation of supervisors will be on the basis of this interview.

Those candidates who have already passed U.G.C / CSIR (JRF) Examinations / NET / SET / SLET /Teacher Fellowship /M.Phil or equivalent examinations need not appear at the written examination and can directly apply to appear at the interview.

Foreign students may apply, and their application shall be considered subject to their degree is found to be at par with the requirements of the University of Calcutta.

Ph.D. Coursework in South & Southeast Asian Studies.
The course work for Ph.D. in South & Southeast Asian Studies shall aim at providing the candidates an introduction to the various theories of social sciences necessary for envisioning a subject for research and teaching techniques of writing a thesis. The Ph.D. course work consist of study of modules on-

• Compulsory Module Research Methodology (Quantitative, Computer Applications, Research Ethics and Review of Published Research in the relevant field)
• Optional Module (Any One)
  • Human Rights & Methods
  • Gender Studies & Methods
  • Area Studies & Methods
  • Development Studies & Methods

Candidates are required to compulsorily attend the course work and submit a minimum of three tutorial essays based on her/his research interest and the subjects handled in the course work. The purpose of the essays would be to familiarize the candidates with the art of writing, footnoting, indexing and any other essential aspects of a thesis.

During the course work it is expected that the candidates would be interacting with the faculties of the Department and gradually through this interaction and exposure to the subjects in the course work, come to a position of framing their research proposal.
