Session: July 2019

Applications are invited from Indian nationals for admission to the Ph.D. programme in the Departments of Bengali, Comparative Literature, Economics, Education, English, Film Studies, History, Library & Information Science, Philosophy, Physical Education, Sanskrit and Sociology.

Note:
  • All applicants must have completed results of 2-Year MA or equivalent degree from any university/institute recognized by the UGC.
  • Applicants who have obtained an MA or equivalent degree of less than two (2) years’ duration, must have completed at least a total of five (5) years of under-graduate and post-graduate study in a recognized university/institute.

Process of Application

  • Candidates should apply in the prescribed form available on the website: www.jaduniv.edu.in.
  • Candidates have to pay the application fees Rs. 500/- (Per Subject) online through SBI Collect System using Credit Card/Debit Card/Net Banking.
  • After payment the downloaded form is to be submitted on and from May 30, 2019, along with a online payment receipt and all testimonials to the Ph.D. Cell, Arts, Subarna Jayanti Bhavan, Ground floor, Jadavpur University Main campus, Kolkata 700032.
  • The last date for online payment is June 21, 2019.
  • The last date for submission of form is June 22, 2019 (5:00 P.M.).
The following documents should be attached with the application form:
  • Two recent passport size photographs.
  • Attested copies of all mark-sheets and certificates, Madhyamik admit card/certificate for verification of age, SC/ST/ OBC-A/OBC-B /PD certificate, where applicable NET/SET certificate, if any.
  • A candidate who has a two-year M.Phil. degree from any university other than Jadavpur University will be required to submit a certificate from the competent authority stating that the selection to the M.Phil course has been made through a written test and that a full paper on Research Methodology of at least one semester duration was taught in the M.Phil course. Otherwise waiver from WRET and/or course-work shall not be granted.
  • Online payment receipt downloaded from SBI server after online payment.
Candidates will be selected through a written test of two hour duration (two and a half hours for Economics) and an interview to be held in the respective Departments.

The candidate who has an M.Phil (Regular two year course) degree and was admitted to the M.Phil programme through a written test, or have qualified NET/SET shall be entitled to get exemption from written admission test and shall be called directly for an interview if s/he satisfies the following conditions:

  • Political Science, History, Archaeology, Anthropology, Geography, English, Economics, Comparative Literature, Bengali, Urdu and similar disciplines in social sciences and humanities;
  • Women’s Studies, Environmental Studies, Development Studies, Cultural Studies, Museological Studies, Strategic Studies, Media Studies and similar interdisciplinary studies.
  • Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany and similar natural science disciplines and also interdisciplinary studies with natural and social science interface such as natural resource studies (example studies on water) or community studies (example studies on social capital or corporate social responsibility).
A candidate who has a two-year M.Phil degree from any university other than Jadavpur University must submit a certificate from the competent authority stating that the selection to the M.Phil course has been made through a written test and that a full paper on Research Methodology of at least one semester duration was taught in the M.Phil course, for consideration for exemption from course work, if selected.
Proper documents must be attached with applications for exemptions from written admission test subject to the above conditions.

  • As per circular Nos. BC-16014/1/82-SC dt.06/08/1984 & BCD-1, D.O.12017/11/89-SCD(R.CELL) dt.09/01/1990 and letter No.1510-SCW dt.31/05/2007 of the Government of West Bengal, the Scheduled Castes/ the Scheduled Tribes of the states other than West Bengal are not entitled to get the benefit of reserved quota in educational institutions in West Bengal unless they can produce Domicile Certificate as a proof for residing in West Bengal for at least 10 years issued by the competent authority.
  • A Candidate applying for seat reserved for the OBC-A / OBC-B category (wherever applicable) must produce an OBC certificate (the issues date of which should not be earlier than July 2018) issued by the competent authority that clearly indicates (i) the category (A or B) he/she belongs to: (ii) that he/she does not belong to creamy layer of the society. Without submission of such an appropriate certificate, the applicant shall NOT be considered for seats reserved for OBC-A / OBC-B category.
    As per the rules of Government of West Bengal, the OBC-A and OBC-B candidates of the states other than West Bengal are not entitled to get the benefit of reserved quota in educational institutions in West Bengal unless they can produce Domicile Certificate as a proof for residing in West Bengal for at least 10 years issued by the competent authority.
  • M.Phil students of Jadavpur University who have successfully defended their viva-voce examinations and have valid Continuing UGC Fellowship (NET-JRF/RGNF/Moulana Azad and the like) may also apply. They may be considered under Continuing Fellowship Holder category provided they have not registered themselves in any other university/Institute after completing their M.Phil degrees at Jadavpur University. The gap period between the date of publication of Final M.Phil result and registration/enrollment in the Ph.D. programme (if selected) must NOT be more than one year.
  • An applicant shall not be considered for admission if
    • s/he is already enrolled in a Ph.D. programme in any other university/institute or in any other department of Jadavpur University.
    • s/he is pursuing 2-Year M.Phil. in the relevant subjects and/or has submitted M.Phil dissertations but either the viva-voce on her/his dissertation has not been conducted on or before July 30, 2018, or has failed in the viva-voce examination.
  • Dates for submission of applications: May 30, 2019 - June 22, 2019.
  • The last date for online payment is June 21, 2019.
  • The remaining schedule for the entire admission process, session July, 2019 will be notified later.
All Applicants must bring in a Statement of Purpose relevant for his/her intended field of research (not more than 500 words) at the time of interview.

Applicants for Ph.D. programme in the Department of Economics shall be required to submit two letters of recommendations in the prescribed format in sealed envelopes at the time of interview in addition to the Statement of Purpose. (Click here for the format of Letter of Recommendation)
