Eligibility for Admission


Subject to change according to the regulations of the Medical Council of India (MCI), Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) and the Court decisions.



MBBS

1. Qualifying Examinations

A candidate seeking admission to first MBBS course:

a) Should have passed two-year Pre-university examination conducted by the Department of Pre-university Education, Karnataka State, with English as one of the subjects, and Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects. The candidate shall have passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually also.

b)Should have passed any other examination conducted by Boards/Councils/Intermediate examination established by State Governments/Central Government, and recognized as equivalent to two-year Pre-university examination by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS)/Association of Indian Universities (AIU), with English as one of the subjects, and Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects. The candidate shall have passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually also.

c) Should have passed Intermediate examination in Science of an Indian university/Board/Council or other recognized examining bodies, with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, which shall include a practical test in these subjects and also English as compulsory subject. The candidate shall have passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually also.

d) Should have passed first year of the three-year degree course of a recognized university with Physics, Chemistry and Biology including a practical test in these subjects provided the examination is an University examination, and the candidate shall have passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually in the Pre-university or other examinations mentioned in the clauses above.

e) Should have passed B.Sc. examination of an Indian University, provided that he/she has passed the B.Sc. examination with not less than two of the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany, Zoology), provided the candidate has passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually in the qualifying examinations mentioned in clauses (a), (b) and (c).

Note: As per the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences Circular No. RGUHS/AC2-ADM/Misc-2/2005-06 dated 20.10.2005, the 10+2 examination conducted by the CBSE Delhi, AHSEC Guwahati, Assam etc., the candidates who have opted for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics subjects at the said examination and failed in any one subject is declared as PASS by the respective Boards. But, the university decides to admit candidates to various Health Science courses who have passed individually in optional/core subjects of the qualifying (10+2) examination and the results are declared pass.

Candidates who have passed Physical Science instead of Physics and Chemistry as two separate subjects are not eligible for admission to MBBS course as per Medical Council of India Regulations vide letter MCI-37(2)/2001/Med.922 dated 14.02.2001 and RGUHS letter UA/ELY-115/1998-2000 dated 22.05.2001.


2. Marks

The selection of students shall be based on merit provided that:

a) In case of admission on the basis of qualifying examination, a candidate for admission to MBBS course must have passed individually in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, and must have obtained not less than 50% marks taken together in Physics, Chemistry and Biology in the qualifying examination.

In respect of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes or Category I, the marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together in the qualifying examination should be not less than 40% instead of 50% as above. The SC/ST candidates outside Karnataka are not entitled for the relaxation in the minimum percentage required for admission as per the Notification No. RGUHS/ACA2-ADM/MISC/2002-03 dated 24.01.2003.

b) In case of admission on the basis of competitive entrance examination, a candidate must have passed individually in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, and must have obtained not less than 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together at the qualifying examination, and in addition must have come in the merit list prepared as a result of such competitive entrance examination by securing not less that 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together in the competitive examination.

In respect of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes or Category I, the marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together in the qualifying examination and competitive entrance examination should be not less than 40% instead of 50% as stated above (Vide amendment of MCI Regulations, 1997, notified in Gazette of Government of India dated 29.05.1999).


3. Age

The candidate should have completed 17 years of age on or before the 31st day of December of the year of admission. The upper age limit is 35 Years.

4. Non-eligible candidates

Application will be rejected in the following cases:

a) Who have made more than two attempts to pass the two-year Pre-university examination or equivalent examination.

b) Who have not passed in English and obtained 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology in aggregate in the two-year Pre-university examination or equivalent examination (For Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes of Karnataka State only 40%).

c) Who have studied, or who at the time of applying for admission to this College, are studying MBBS or Veterinary Science or Dental Surgery or Pharmacy or Nursing or Indian or Other systems of Medicine or any other professional courses.

d) Religious Sisters who have not completed one year of community life after their first profession, that is, as on the day of commencement of class.


B.Sc. Degree Course in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT)

A candidate seeking admission to this course:

a) Should have passed the two-year Pre-university examination conducted by the Pre-university Education Board in the State of Karnataka or any other examination considered as equivalent thereto by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), and have scored not less than 40% of marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

b) Should have completed 17 years of age at the time of admission, and not crossed the age of 35 years.


B.Sc. Degree Course in Medical Imaging Technology

1. Qualifying Examinations

A candidate seeking admission to this course:

a) Should have passed the two-year Pre-university examination conducted by the Pre-university Education Board in the State of Karnataka or any other examination considered as equivalent thereto by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), with English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics as optional subjects, and have scored not less than 40% of marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Note: "In case of admission to B.Sc. Imaging Technology or B.Sc. Radiotherapy Technology, the candidate should have passed the Pre-university examination or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics as principal subjects of study" (An extract from RGUHS Notification No. UA/AUTH/1 year A.H.S./126/2007-08 dated 29.06.2007)

b) Should have passed the Pre-university course from a recognized Board with vocational course in Radiography/Radiology.

2. Age

A candidate should have completed 17 years of age at the time of admission, and not crossed the age of 35 years.


B.Sc. Degree Course in Renal Dialysis

A candidate seeking admission to this course:

a) Should have passed the two-year Pre-university examination conducted by the Pre-university Education Board in the State of Karnataka or any other examination considered as equivalent thereto by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), and have scored not less than 40% of marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

b) Should have completed 17 years of age at the time of admission, and not crossed the age of 35 years.


B.Sc. Degree Course in Cardiac Perfusion Technology

A candidate seeking admission to this course:

a) Should have passed the two-year Pre-university examination conducted by the Pre-university Education Board in the State of Karnataka or any other examination considered as equivalent thereto by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), and have scored not less than 40% of marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

b) Should have completed 17 years of age at the time of admission, and not crossed the age of 35 years.


Postgraduate Degree (MD/MS)

A candidate seeking admission to this course:

a) Should have qualified for the MBBS degree from any university recognized by the Medical Council of India and should have satisfactorily completed the Rotating Compulsory Internship of one year before the starting of the courses, and registered with the Indian Medical Council, and thereafter preferably served in India for a period of at least TWO YEARS in medically underserved areas, recognized as such by this institution.

b) Can apply for any two Postgraduate degree courses and two Postgraduate diploma courses in the same specialties.

Note:

a) Special consideration will be given to alumni of St. John's Medical College who have served in medically underserved areas and underprivileged people, recognized as such by the college.

b) A candidate who is holding a Postgraduate diploma in a particular specialty will apply for the Postgraduate degree course only in the same specialty and not for any other.

Non-eligibility:

a) Candidates who have taken more than TWO YEARS beyond the minimum period required, to pass the MBBS course are ordinarily not eligible to apply for the Postgraduate degree course.

b) Candidates, who have not passed the MBBS degree examination conducted by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences(RGUHS) / Bangalore / Mysore / Mangalore / Karnataka / Gulbarga University or an equivalent examination declared as such by the State Government/University in the State, shall not be eligible for admission.

c) Candidates, who are above 45 years of age as on the last date prescribed for the admission, shall not be eligible for admission to any Postgraduate degree course. However, in respect of the candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Karnataka, the age limit of 45 years is relaxable by three years.

d) A candidate who is already holding a Postgraduate degree in a particular specialty shall not be eligible to apply for another specialty.

e) A candidate, who is studying for any Postgraduate diploma/degree course, but has not completed the said course by passing the prescribed examination on or before the last date of submitting the application, shall not be eligible for selecton for any higher diploma/degree course.


Postgraduate Degree (M.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology)

A candidate seeking admission to this course:

a) Should have completed successfully the B.Sc. course in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) and have passed with not less than 50% in the qualifying examination.

b) Should have completed 20 years of age at the time of admission, and not crossed the age of 35 years.


Postgraduate Diploma

A candidate seeking admission to this course:

a) Should have qualified for the MBBS degree from any university recognized by the Medical Council of India and should have satisfactorily completed the Rotating Compulsory Internship of one year before the starting of the courses, and registered with the Indian Medical Council, and thereafter preferably served in India for a period of at least TWO YEARS in medically underserved areas, recognized as such by this institution.

b) Can apply for any two Postgraduate degree courses and two Postgraduate diploma courses in the same specialties.

Note:

Super-specialty Courses

Doctor of Medicine (DM)

A candidate can be considered for the admission to the above super-specialty course if he/she has passed M.D. General Medicine from any university recognized by the Medical Council of India.

Master of Chirurgy (MCh)

A candidate can be considered for the admission to the above super-specialty course if he/she has passed M.S. General Surgery from any university recognized by the Medical Council of India.

DNB in Respiratory Medicine

The candidate should have qualified for the MBBS degree from any university recognized by the Medical Council of India, and completed Part I of DNBE.

(OR)

The candidate should have qualified for the MBBS degree from any university recognized by the Medical Council of India and passed DTCD.

DNB in ENT

The candidate should have qualified for the MBBS degree from any university recognized by the Medical Council of India, and completed Part I of DNBE.

(OR)

The candidate should have qualified for the MBBS degree from any university recognized by the Medical Council of India and passed DLO.

DNB in Gastroenterology, Nephrology and Neurology

A candidate can be considered for admission to the above courses if he/she has passed MD/DNB in Medicine or Paediatrics plus passed in Super-specialty CET of the NBE.

DNB in Neurosurgery and Urology

A candidate can be considered for admission to the above courses if he/she has passed MS/DNB in Surgery plus passed in Super-specialty CET of the NBE.

DNB in Neonatology

A candidate can be considered for admission to the above courses if he/she has passed MD/DNB in Paediatrics plus passed in Super-specialty CET of the NBE.

Started in 1963 by the Catholic Bishop's Conference of India, St. John's has grown to be listed as one of the top medical educational institutions in the country. The Supreme Court of India, granting the privilege of conducting its own entrance test, declared St. John's Medical College as standing on a different footing altogether among the private medical colleges in the matter of admissions made strictly on the basis of merit. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council, a Review Committee of the University Grants Commission, has recognized the excellence of St. John's Medical College and Hospital and accorded it with a 5 star grading.

Reaching Out to the Medically Unreached

St. John's Medical College offers graduate, postgraduate, diploma and super specialty degrees recognized by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bangalore, Karnataka. The mission orientation of the institution is to train healthcare professionals, especially to serve in the medically underserved areas of the country. Medical students execute a bond to serve in such areas for two years after their graduation. About 25% of them are permanently working in remote areas, and are committed to addressing the desperate health needs of these unreached rural populations.

At present, a total of 726 students are undergoing their training in Medicine and Paramedical courses. A total of 608 staff, both teaching and non-teaching are on the payroll of the College and rendering their services to the best of their abilities. Alumni and faculty of the institution hold eminent positions in various fields associated with medicine and health care, nationally and internationally.
