Behala College New Courses, Admission Process & Future Plans | News

Behala College is entering a new phase following its transition to autonomous status, with plans to introduce new academic programmes and manage its own undergraduate admissions starting from the 2026–27 session. The institution will no longer rely on the state’s centralised admission system.

Although the college secured autonomy last year from the University Grants Commission, it was unable to conduct independent admissions at that time because the undergraduate admission cycle had already commenced. This delay occurred even amid reported opposition from the University of Calcutta.

According to principal Sudip Kumar Chakrabarty, the college intends to begin its admission process soon after the release of higher secondary examination results, similar to other autonomous institutions.

In the previous year, the centralised admission portal became active several weeks after the publication of Class XII results in May. This delay led to dissatisfaction among many colleges, which felt it affected their ability to attract top-performing students.

As part of its academic expansion, Behala College is launching a Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) programme. The institution has received approval from the All India Council for Technical Education and is planning to introduce additional courses in areas such as artificial intelligence and web design from the 2026–27 academic year.

Future plans also include a three-year undergraduate law programme and a certificate course focused on drone technology.

To promote its autonomous status, the college is using platforms like YouTube and Instagram and plans to place informational notices outside schools so that students are aware of its independent admission process.

Since gaining autonomy, the college has formed its own academic boards responsible for designing curricula, setting examination papers, and overseeing evaluation processes.

Former principal Sharmila Mitra noted that introducing modern, career-oriented courses such as BBA and web design is essential to stay relevant and attract talented students, as traditional programmes are becoming less appealing.
