CBSE Class 10 Passing Criteria 2026-27: 33% Rule Unchanged | News

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has put an end to uncertainty surrounding the Class 10 passing requirements for the 2026-27 academic year. Students appearing for the 2027 board examinations will continue to follow the existing 33 per cent qualifying standard, with theory and internal assessment marks considered together.

The clarification comes as CBSE has released the Sample Question Papers (SQPs) and Marking Schemes for Classes 10 and 12 for the 2026-27 session. The board has also confirmed that the examination format and assessment structure will remain unchanged.

Why Did Questions Arise Over the Passing Criteria?

Uncertainty began after details related to the 2026-27 curriculum and assessment framework led to speculation that students might need to meet the minimum qualifying percentage separately in their written examinations and internal assessments.

Such an arrangement would have represented a significant change from the current system. It also prompted concerns among students, parents and schools, particularly about how marks from internal assessments would affect a student's overall result.

CBSE has now clarified that the existing method will continue for Class 10 students during the 2026-27 academic session.

How the 33% Requirement Will Be Calculated

The clarification was reiterated during a CBSE webinar conducted for schools on matters related to the 2027 board examinations, including the List of Candidates (LOC) process and correction of student information.

CBSE Controller of Examinations Sanyam Bhardwaj explained that the proposed requirement for students to meet the qualifying threshold independently in different components would not be implemented. Instead, marks obtained in theory and internal assessment will continue to be combined when determining whether a student has met the qualifying standard.

Therefore, students do not need to achieve 33 per cent separately in the written examination and internal assessment.

For a subject assessed using an 80:20 theory-to-internal-assessment distribution, a student who receives 15 marks out of 20 in internal assessment would require another 18 marks out of 80 in the written examination to reach a total of 33 marks out of 100.

What Class 10 Students Appearing in 2027 Need to Know

For the 2027 CBSE Class 10 board examinations, the qualifying criteria and assessment approach will remain consistent with those followed during the 2025-26 academic session.

However, the clarification applies specifically to the passing and assessment arrangements. It does not mean that other aspects of the 2026-27 academic framework have been withdrawn. Students should continue preparing according to the syllabus, subject-wise structure and assessment requirements prescribed for their batch.

CBSE has also released the Sample Question Papers and Marking Schemes for the new academic session, giving students and schools an indication of the examination format and expected assessment approach.

2027 Board Exam Datesheet Yet to Be Announced

The official tentative timetable for the 2027 CBSE Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations has not yet been released.

Students should therefore avoid relying on unofficial dates circulating online and wait for CBSE to publish the examination schedule through its official channels.

Schools have also been instructed to carefully verify student information during registration and the LOC submission process. CBSE has begun the LOC process for the 2027 board examinations, while further registration-related activities will take place according to the board's prescribed timeline.

For now, the key takeaway for Class 10 students is straightforward: the 33 per cent passing requirement remains in place, and theory and internal-assessment marks will continue to be considered together.
