The University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) is moving ahead with plans to establish a degree-granting campus in Hyderabad after receiving a Letter of Intent from India’s University Grants Commission (UGC).
If the project proceeds as planned, CU Denver will become the first public university from the United States to establish a physical campus in India. The Hyderabad institution would also be the first international university campus in Telangana.
The proposed campus is expected to offer programmes designed around areas experiencing strong demand from students and employers. Initial academic offerings are likely to include disciplines such as:
The academic model is expected to emphasise cross-disciplinary study, practical experience and preparation for professional careers. Students would also have opportunities to benefit from academic connections with CU Denver’s main campus in Colorado.
CU Denver is expected to continue working through the regulatory requirements necessary to launch the Hyderabad campus. The university also plans to engage with academic institutions and industry stakeholders during the development process.
The first group of students is currently expected to begin their studies in August 2027, subject to the completion of the required approvals and preparations.
Further academic programmes could be introduced from the second year, with proposals submitted to the UGC for consideration and approval.
The proposed institution is expected to incorporate several principles associated with India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
These include multidisciplinary learning, stronger international engagement, practical and outcome-oriented education, and greater emphasis on employability. The university intends to combine academic instruction with industry exposure and hands-on learning.
CU Denver’s leadership has also highlighted its long-standing relationship with Indian students. The Hyderabad initiative is being positioned as an extension of that connection, bringing the university’s academic and career-focused approach to students within India.
CU Denver has identified education technology and learning company Emeritus as its strategic joint venture partner for the India initiative.
Emeritus is expected to assist with the establishment and expansion of the Hyderabad campus, particularly in areas outside the university's academic operations.
The partnership is intended to help make internationally oriented education more accessible to Indian students while connecting academic programmes with the changing requirements of the employment market.
The proposed CU Denver campus comes amid increasing interest from international universities in establishing a presence in India.
India has been encouraging greater international participation in higher education as part of its broader efforts to expand global academic collaboration and provide students with access to international learning opportunities within the country.
The Hyderabad campus, once operational, would mark a significant step in that expansion and could further strengthen educational and industry links between India and the United States.
