A recent revision by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) is prompting schools to recommend an additional subject for students entering Class XI. Beginning with the 2027 ISC (Class XII) examinations, students must pass English along with four other subjects, replacing the earlier requirement of three.

In light of this change, several schools are guiding students and parents to select six subjects instead of the traditional five. This shift comes at a time when students are transitioning from Class X, with new academic sessions typically starting in mid-April.

Educators highlight that an extra subject can provide multiple benefits. It allows students to explore interests beyond core academics, including creative and practical areas such as art, physical education, or home science. These subjects can support overall development and may also improve final scores by balancing weaker performances.

Despite these advantages, some students—particularly those in the science stream—are hesitant, as they prefer focusing on their primary subjects. However, schools encourage all students to consider a balanced approach, suggesting that lighter or skill-based subjects can reduce academic pressure.

Schools are also expanding their offerings to include subjects like mass media, communication, and entrepreneurship, providing students with broader academic exposure.

Overall, educators believe that subject selection should support both academic success and personal growth. Studying a wider range of subjects can also give students more flexibility when choosing higher education paths.
