For the 2026–27 academic year, the Higher Education Department of Jammu & Kashmir has removed the requirement of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for admission into four-year undergraduate programmes across government colleges in the Union Territory.
Admissions will now be based entirely on Class 12 examination results instead of entrance test scores. This revised system will apply to all 144 government degree colleges, replacing the earlier limited CUET-based model.
The change follows recent adjustments in the academic calendar, including the reinstatement of the November session. Since Class 12 results are being declared in January, students previously faced a long gap before college admissions under the CUET system. The new approach aims to reduce this delay and ensure a smoother transition from school to higher education.
Officials have stated that admissions for undergraduate and integrated postgraduate programmes will begin shortly. A centralized online portal will be used for applications, where candidates must register, select preferences, and participate in merit-based seat allocation.
A detailed schedule covering registration dates, choice filling, allotment rounds, and fee submission will be released separately. Meanwhile, students from JKBOSE, CBSE, and other recognized boards are encouraged to explore available courses in advance.
To support applicants, counselling and facilitation cells have been established in government colleges to assist with course selection, eligibility guidance, and admission-related queries. Students and parents are also encouraged to visit campuses for better understanding of academic programmes.
Students are further advised to familiarize themselves with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 framework. The four-year undergraduate structure includes multiple exit options such as a certificate after one year, diploma after two years, a degree after three years, and an honours or research degree after four years, along with flexible subject combinations.
Further updates, including the official admission notification and application portal details, will be shared through official channels in due course.
