Loreto College, one of Kolkata's oldest higher educational institutions with a legacy of more than a century, has been granted autonomous status by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Alongside this development, the institution has announced that it will begin admitting male students from the next academic session, marking a significant change in its admission policy.

The autonomous status has been approved for a period of ten years, covering the academic sessions from 2026-27 to 2035-36. The decision follows recommendations made by the UGC's Standing Committee on Autonomous Colleges. The University of Calcutta has also been instructed to issue the required notification and complete the formal process in accordance with UGC regulations.

Academic Independence

Students admitted to the first year under the new academic session will study under the autonomous system, whereas students already enrolled in senior semesters will continue under the existing University of Calcutta framework until they complete their courses.

With autonomy, the college will have the authority to develop its own curriculum, prepare academic schedules, conduct examinations independently and publish results without relying on the affiliating university. The institution also expects greater flexibility in introducing innovative teaching methods, modern evaluation practices and interdisciplinary learning opportunities.

Expansion of Courses

The college is planning to expand its academic offerings by introducing several new programmes designed to meet evolving educational and industry requirements. Proposed additions include undergraduate courses in commerce, business administration and legal education, along with career-focused programmes in emerging disciplines.

Future Plans

To accommodate increased student enrolment and support the launch of additional programmes, the institution is also considering the introduction of morning and evening academic shifts, allowing for more effective utilization of campus infrastructure.
