The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) under the National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a revised MBBS seat matrix for the 2026–27 academic session. The update increases the approved MBBS intake by 13,636 seats across medical colleges in India.

The revised matrix was issued on September 22, 2026. It is relevant to NEET UG 2026 counselling because it reflects the latest approved intake capacity for the 2026–27 admission session.

How the MBBS Seat Numbers Have Changed

The updated figures include both renewed seats and additional capacity approved by the regulatory authorities.

• 1,27,028 previously approved MBBS seats have been renewed.
• 13,636 additional MBBS seats have been approved.
• Government medical colleges account for 64,121 seats.
• Private medical colleges account for 76,543 seats.

In total, the revised matrix covers 839 medical colleges, comprising 447 government institutions and 392 private institutions.

41 New Medical Colleges Included

The revised seat matrix also incorporates 41 newly established medical colleges. Together, these institutions contribute 3,850 MBBS seats.

Apart from new institutions, the latest revision also includes sanctioned increases in the annual MBBS intake of existing medical colleges.

The additional capacity comes from approvals for newly established medical colleges as well as authorised increases in the intake capacity of existing institutions.

The current figures may also change in the future. Further revisions could follow decisions taken by appeal committees or other competent authorities.
