The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) is preparing to strengthen workplace accountability by introducing biometric attendance for its employees. Newly appointed board president Lalu Das has identified improvements in office administration and school functioning as key areas requiring attention.
The proposed attendance system will initially be restored and implemented at the board's headquarters before being extended to schools. A detailed plan outlining the proposed administrative and institutional reforms is expected to be developed after the Durga Puja vacation.
Biometric attendance was previously introduced at the secondary education board during the tenure of former president Kalyanmoy Ganguly. However, the equipment used to record attendance has reportedly remained non-functional for around two years. Das has directed officials to arrange for its repair.
Focus on Educational Quality and Infrastructure
Alongside administrative reforms, the WBBSE president has emphasised the importance of improving educational standards through better school infrastructure and measures to address teacher shortages. He has expressed optimism about progress on the issue of teacher recruitment.
Das has also highlighted the need to strengthen teachers' professional capabilities through training and orientation programmes. Improving education in government-run secondary schools, he indicated, will require both infrastructure development and a more accountable approach to institutional responsibilities.
These priorities are expected to form part of the board's broader reform agenda, with the objective of improving school administration and supporting better educational outcomes across West Bengal.
