Admission to Ph.D. Programme, 2025

  • Online applications are invited from the eligible intending candidates for admission to the Ph.D. Programme 2025 under the Faculty Council (Science) and the Faculty Council (Arts, Commerce, Law etc.), The University of Burdwan. Online form will be available on the University website (www.buruniv.ac.in) on and from 01/06/2026 to 15/06/2026.
  • Eligibility criteria for admission to Ph.D. Programme: Candidates holding a 1-year/2-semester master's degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or a professional degree or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree of The University of Burdwan in the subject concerned or allied/relevant subject, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC-7 point scale. A relaxation of 5% of marks or equivalent relaxation of grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the UGC and notification of the state government from time to time.
    Candidates who have qualified in the UGC-NET (including JRF) / CSIR-NET (including JRF) / SET / SLET / GATE / ICMR / DBT or similar National level tests or teacher fellowship shall only be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. Programme 2025.

  • Applications of the candidates failing to fulfil the minimum eligibility criteria of admission, will be rejected.
  • Candidates must keep ready a passport size photograph, scanned copies of his/her signature, admit card of 10th standard, marksheets of all examinations, reserved category certificate (if applicable) for uploading the same while filling up the application form.

How to Apply
  • After completion of the above-mentioned step (i.e. Enrollment of Academic Bank of Credit), the applicants should fill in the online application form through the links given below:

    After successful submission of Application Form, all applicants are advised to take a Printout of the submitted Application form along with Application Sequence Number for future references.
  • Candidates, while filling in the Application Forms, shall have to upload the relevant documents online. Candidature shall be cancelled if it is not found during verification or at any stage of the Programme that the uploaded documents are in conformity with the original document.
Eligibility
  • Candidates holding a 1-year/2-semester master's degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or a professional degree or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree of The University of Burdwan in the subject concerned or allied/relevant subject, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC-7 point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, may apply to the Secretary of the Faculty Council for Post-graduate Studies concerned in the prescribed form for admission to the Ph.D. programme in any of the subjects in which the Doctoral Degree may have been instituted.
    In case of a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree Programme (with research) should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed.
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks or equivalent relaxation of grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the UGC and notification of the state government from time to time.
  • The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualification marks without including the grace mark procedures.
  • Subject to fulfilment of the conditions stipulated in clause i) or ii) or iii) above, candidates who have qualified in the UGC-NET or UGC-CSIR NET under different categories (eligible for admission to Ph.D. with JRF and appointment as Assistant Professor / eligible for admission to Ph.D. without JRF and appointment as Assistant Professor / eligible for admission to Ph.D. only)/SET/SLET/GATE/ICMR/DBT or Similar National level Tests or DST INSPIRE Fellow or teacher fellowship shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. Programme.
  • State level reservation policy shall be taken into consideration while admitting students in the Ph.D. Programme.
Procedure for Admission
Each eligible candidate shall have to appear for an interview/Viva-voce of 100 marks to be conducted by the Doctoral Committee at the level of individual University Department of Studies/University School or Centre for Studies concerned. At the time of interview, the Doctoral Committee will objectively assess the research interest of the candidate in the relevant field/area and award marks giving weightage follows:

All in-service applicants intend to pursue Ph.D. Programme 2025 shall have to apply through proper channel and must submit ‘No Objection’ Certificate from their employers at the time of admission for allowing them to complete the Course Work (6 Months) on regular basis.
Admission of International Students in Ph.D. Programme
Each supervisor can guide up to two international research scholars on a supernumerary basis over and above the permitted number of Ph.D. scholars as specified in Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree, Regulations, 2022, published in the Gazette of India on 7th November, 2022.

The BRS of the concerned subject/discipline will decide their own selection procedure for Ph.D. admission of international students keeping in view the guidelines/norms in this regard issued by the statutory/regulatory bodies/Regulations of the University from time to time.
