Applications are invited from eligible candidates for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programme of the University of Calcutta in the Subjects/Departments listed below, for the year 2026 (Cycle 1), in accordance with the University of Calcutta Ph.D. Regulations, 2025 (framed in conformity with the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022).

    The number of seats in each Subject/Department, the supervisor-wise vacancy position, and the applicable reservation roster will be notified separately, before the selection interview, by the respective Department/Centre/School concerned and on the official website of the University (www.caluniv.ac.in ).
  • Eligibility (essential criteria)
    • A candidate must possess, in the concerned/relevant subject, one of the following qualifications from a University/Institution recognised by the UGC or the University of Calcutta:
      • a Master’s degree, or a qualification declared equivalent thereto by the competent statutory body (e.g., M.D.), with at least 55% marks in aggregate (or an equivalent grade on the UGC 10-point scale); or
      • a one-year/two-year Master’s degree following a four-year/eight-semester Bachelor’s degree, with at least 55% marks (or equivalent grade); or
      • a four-year/eight-semester Bachelor’s degree (with research) with at least 75% marks in aggregate (or equivalent grade); or
      • an M.Phil. degree with at least 55% marks (or equivalent grade); or
      • a five-year integrated programme leading to a Master’s degree, with at least 55% marks (or equivalent grade).
    • A relaxation of 5% of marks (from 55% to 50%, and a corresponding relaxation of the 75% requirement) shall be allowed to candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/DifferentlyAbled/Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories as notified by the UGC from time to time.
    • Candidates in the final semester/year of the qualifying degree may apply provisionally; such candidates must produce the final mark sheet/degree certificate before the date of interview/admission, failing which their candidature shall stand cancelled.
    • Selection shall be made through the two-stage process prescribed in the Regulations: qualification in UGC-NET/CSIR-NET/SET/GATE/GPAT or other national-level examination (in a subject matching the discipline of the Department concerned), followed by an interview before the Departmental Committee. NET Category-1 (JRF) candidates are assessed by interview; NET Category-2 and Category-3 and equivalent candidates are assessed on the basis of 70% weightage to the qualifyingexamination score and 30% to the interview.
    • Foreign nationals are exempt from the entrance test and are considered primarily on the basis of their research proposal, subject to minimum eligibility and an equivalence certificate issued by AIU/UGC, in terms of the Regulations and the relevant CSR notification of the University.
    • Admission is subject to the availability of seats, the supervisor-wise vacancy position, and the reservation policy of the Government of West Bengal. The subject/discipline-wise distribution of seats, the number of seats available under each supervisor, and the detailed criteria and procedure for selection will be notified separately, at least fifteen (15) days before the selection interview, by the respective Department/Centre/School and on the official website of the University (www.caluniv.ac.in ).
    For the complete and authoritative eligibility conditions and selection procedure, candidates must refer to the University of Calcutta Ph.D. Regulations, 2025. In the event of any inconsistency, the Regulations shall prevail.
  • How to Apply
    • Candidates shall download the prescribed application form annexed to this Notice (also available on the official website of the University, www.caluniv.ac.in), print it as it is without any alteration, and fill it in clearly and legibly.
    • A recent passport-size photograph (self-attested) shall be affixed in the space provided on the form.
    • The filled-in form must be accompanied by self-attested copies of all relevant supporting documents, including: mark sheets and certificates from the Higher Secondary examination onwards; the Bachelor’s/Master’s (and M.Phil., if any) degree certificates; the qualifying-examination (NET/CSIRNET/SET/GATE/GPAT or equivalent) certificate, if applicable; the category certificate (SC/ST/OBCA/OBC-B/EWS), if applicable; the disability certificate, if applicable; the No-Objection Certificate from the employer, in the case of employed/part-time applicants; the AIU/UGC equivalence certificate, in the case of foreign nationals or holders of a degree from another university; and a selfattested copy of Aadhaar (Indian nationals) or passport (foreign nationals).
    • No application fee is payable.
    • A separate application form, complete with enclosures, shall be submitted for each Subject/Department to which the candidate seeks admission.
    • The duly filled-in application, together with all enclosures, shall be submitted to the office of the respective Department/Centre/School to which the candidate is applying.
  • Last Date of Submission
    • The duly completed application, with all enclosures, must reach the office of the concerned Department/Centre/School on or before the fifteenth (15th) working day from the date of publication of this Notice on the University website, i.e., on or before ______________ (to be specified by the PAO at the time of publication). For this purpose, “working day” means a day on which the administrative offices of the University remain open, excluding Sundays and University/Government holidays.
    • Applications received after the last date, or that are incomplete, illegible or unsigned, are liable to be rejected without further reference to the applicant.
    • Each receiving Department/Centre/School shall maintain a register recording the receipt of applications, with the date of receipt, for official records, and shall, where practicable, issue an acknowledgement to the applicant.
  • General Conditions
    • The mere submission of an application does not confer any right to admission. Selection shall be strictly in accordance with the Regulations 2025, the availability of seats and supervisors, and the applicable reservation roster.
    • Candidates must produce original documents for verification as and when required by the appropriate authority.
    • Canvassing in any form shall render a candidate liable to disqualification.
    • The University reserves the right to modify, postpone or cancel the admission process, in whole or in part, without assigning any reason; the decision of the competent authority of the University shall be final and binding.
    • This Notice, and all subsequent amendments, corrigenda and follow-up notices relating to this admission, will be published on the official website of the University, www.caluniv.ac.in. Candidates are advised to visit the website regularly; no separate individual intimation will be sent.
