Admission to Ph.D. Programme for the session 2026–27

General Instructions
Gauhati University invites applications into the PhD program (Autumn Session) for 2026-2027 to be filled up through Gauhati University Research Eligibility Test (GURET). The list of Vacancies in different departments is being made available (Vacancy List).

• Applicant fee is Rs. 1500.00 (One thousand Five Hundred) only per subject and the bank transaction fee.
• All applicants MUST go through the Central Application Process (CAP) [in the SAMARTH portal; https://gauhatiadmission.samarth.edu.in ] and complete the process of filling up the form and pay the fee. Without the remittance of this fee, you will not be able to appear in GURET. The fee should be paid through online payment gateway only.

An Overview:

• Admission into the Autumn session of the PhD Programme of Gauhati University for the academic session 2026-2027 is a two-tier process.
• The Central Application Process (CAP).
• Counselling.
• Completing the CAP DOES NOT guarantee admission into the Ph.D. Programme.

Selection Procedure:
A candidate will have to appear in the following as per as per following as a part of CAP

• GURET 2026.
• Counselling: Selection at the Department Level, following qualification at GURET, 2026.
  (60% weightage will be on GURET and 40% on counselling)

Eligible Criterion:

• Any person having a Postgraduate Degree or its equivalent, of GU or any recognized university/institute with not less than 55 (fifty-five) percent of marks or equivalent grade in the concerned subject may apply for admission to the Ph.D. programme in the subject in which the candidate has the Master’s Degree or in a subject recognized by the respective department as its allied subject which may not be vice-a-versa for consideration by respective Departmental Research Committee (DRC) or Faculty Research Committee (FRC). The minimum marks for SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates or a differently-abled candidate (with equal to or more than 40% disability) is 50% or equivalent grade. A relaxation in respect of eligibility criteria in terms of marks shall be applied as per applicable rules and regulations of Govt. of Assam.
• In case of any special eligibility conditions or deviations from the above generic eligibility conditions, concerned DRC may submit the proposal to the Academic Registrar for consideration and necessary approval from the Vice Chancellor.
• In case of Medical Sciences, the rules of Medical Council of India/Indian Nursing Council/Rehabilitation Council of India/ recommendation of Faculty of Medicine for Clinical Courses shall be followed (where necessary).
• Students who have appeared or are appearing in their postgraduate final examinations may also apply for admission into the Ph.D. Programme. However, such candidates will be required to furnish their results before the final selection list of successful applicants is prepared by the concerned department.

The final list of selected candidates will be prepared by concerned Departmental Research Committee (DRC) and uploaded by the Office of the Academic Registrar, GU for online admission of the candidates.

Ph.D. Programme at LGBRIMH, Tezpur, Assam:
The Ph.D. programme at LGBRIMH, is conducted under the Faculty of Medicine & Allied Health Sciences across the following three departments:

• Department of Clinical Psychology
• Department of Psychiatric Nursing
• Department of Psychiatric Social Work

The PhD programme has a minimum duration of three years at the Institute. All Ph.D. scholars undertake dual responsibilities as researchers and clinical supervisors within the Mental Health Services of the Institute; accordingly, the specific eligibility criteria outlined below are prescribed.

Broadly, the Ph.D. programme at LGBRIMH follows the norms and regulations governing PhD programmes under Gauhati University. In place of a Departmental Research Committee (DRC), the Institute constitutes a Faculty Research Committee (FRC), chaired by the Dean. The members of the FRC include all Heads of Departments offering PhD programmes and all recognised research guides. Course Work is conducted for all PhD scholars through SAMARTH portal.

Ph.D. scholars are provided a monthly stipend of Rs. 25,00/- along with semi-furnished hostel accommodation (one BHK), subject to availability.
