VITREE (January 2027 session) conducted on 06th December, 2026 (Sunday)

Vellore Institute of Technology Research Entrance Examination (VITREE) is conducted for admission to various Ph.D. / Direct Ph.D. Programmes in VIT group of Institutions. VITREE - January 2027 session intake will be conducted on 06th December, 2026 (Sunday) at designated centers across India. The duration of the examination will be 2 hours. All questions will be Multiple Choice Questions and one mark for right and 'Zero' mark for the wrong answer. There is no negative marks for wrong answers. Those who score 'Zero' in total will be declared as 'Not qualified' and will not be eligible to participate in the personal interview process.

For Ph.D., Ph.D. (Deep Technology) & Ph.D. (Industry)
(eligible relevant master’s degree only): The question paper will contain 100 MCQs, divided as follows:
- 70 Technical questions
- 15 English communication skills questions
- 15 Statistics and probability questions

For Direct Ph.D.
(applicable for B.E. or B.Tech. graduates only): The question paper will also contain 100 MCQs, divided as follows:
- 80 Technical questions
- 20 English communication skills questions
- Except language subject, all question paper will be in English only.

VITREE Marks	Scores from the VIT Research Entrance Examination (VITREE), testing theoretical knowledge and research preparedness.
Valid GATE/NET Score (If applicable)	A valid GATE/NET score to assess subject-specific knowledge and eligibility.
Interview Process	The interview process consists of
i) Statement of Purpose (SoP)/Research Proposal	Clarity of research interests, objectives, and goals.
ii) Questions on SoP	Ability to defend the research proposal and answer questions.
iii) Subject Knowledge	Depth of knowledge in the relevant subject area.
iv) Communication Skills	Ability to clearly communicate research ideas and participate in academic discourse.
v) Research Experience	Previous research contributions, including publications and projects.

iii) Pitching / Innovation / Novelty	Pitching is about presenting your idea in a compelling way that demonstrates value and feasibility. Innovation refers to introducing something new, whether it’s an idea, method, or product. Novelty is the originality and uniqueness of an idea, making it stand out in its field.
iv) Timeline and Milestones	Ability to clearly communicate research ideas and participate in academic discourse.
v) Research Experience	Previous research contributions, including publications and projects.
