About the course
The Behavioural Science and Public Policy programme offers interdisciplinary training to understand and address public problems. It examines how cognition, individual decisions, social norms, culture, institutions and political economy shape behaviour and policy outcomes. The programme connects behavioural and decision sciences with public policy, research methods, human-centred design and systems thinking, with particular attention to India and to insights from international scholarship.
The programme builds on the Jadavpur University and UNICEF partnership in Communication for Social and Behaviour Change, retaining its strengths in social inquiry, participation and communication while broadening its academic scope to include behavioural public policy, evidence, design and implementation.
Through field inquiry and linked policy laboratories, students will develop skills in behavioural and systems diagnosis, intervention design and testing, and planning for delivery, adaptation and scale. Applications span public services and allied organisations, markets and digital environments.
Indicative areas of study
- Public policy, institutions and political economy
- Behaviour, decision-making and social norms
- Research methods, data analysis and evaluation
- Behavioural and human-centred design
- Systems thinking and policy implementation
Ethics, equity and rights inform all areas, including applications in digital environments.
Teaching combines conceptual study, case analysis, field engagement and applied project work. The programme is relevant to graduates, researchers and professionals across government, civil society, public services and communication.
