GRI Research Fellowship (GRI-RF) with a stipend of Rs. 8,000/- per month is available for Ph.D. scholars
who join in the full-time mode, subject to the conditions that not receiving any other fellowship from any funding agency.

Online Entrance Test can be prefered. If prefered Rs. 1,000/- will be added to the application cost. Online entrance test and interview restricted to candidates from far off places like, North East, Kashmir, Ladakh, Andamans and Lakshadweep.

The admission for the current academic session will be made on the basis of following:

Score obtained in the UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR Examination
(OR)
-
Other equivalent National Level Examination recognized by the UGC
(OR)

Score obtained in the Entrance Test conducted by the Gandhigram Rural Institute (Deemed to be University) for Non-NET candidates.
The following are the eligibility conditions to seek admission to the Ph.D. Programme:

Candidates who have completed a 1-year (2 semester) Master’s degree programme after a 4-year (8 semesters) Bachelor’s degree (Hons) programme or a 2-year (4semesters) Master’s degree programme after a 3-year Bachelor’s degree programme or any qualification declared equivalent to the Master’s degree programme or any qualification declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the competent statutory regulatory body with at least 55% marks (7.0 CGPA) in aggregate or an equivalent grade wherever grading system is followed.

Equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of educational institution.

A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer) / Differently Abled, Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the University Grants Commission (UGC) taken from time to time. Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year (8 semesters) Bachelor’s degree programme (Hons) should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed.

Candidates with degrees in Agriculture and allied fields OR Engineering and allied fields should have completed a Bachelor’s degree with a duration of four years in the relevant field along with a two years Master’s degree with appropriate specialization as recognized by the statutory body concerned.

In addition to the above criteria, those clearing UGC-NET/UGCCSIR test or such other National examinations recognized by the UGC as equivalent for pursuing Doctoral Research as mentioned hereunder are eligible:

JRF-qualified candidates will be admitted to the Ph.D. programme based on an interview as per the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D.) Regulations, 2022 and they can join anytime during the academic year.

For those candidates without JRF, 70% weightage will be given to their NET score and 30% weightage to their performance in the personal interview. Admission will be based on the combined merit of NET marks and the marks obtained in the interview.

The Candidates qualified in JRF shall be admitted to the Ph.D. Programme based on Interview performance. NET – qualified candidates shall be eligible to appear for the interview without an entrance test. The entrance test and NET scores shall be considered only for eligibility to attend the interview. Final selection and admission shall be based exclusively on interview marks. Preference shall be given to NET – qualified candidates.

In the case of candidates with Master’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Agriculture, admission to Ph.D. programme will be based on an entrance test and an interview conducted by the Institute. Also Common Entrance Test will be conducted by the Controller of Examinations for the eligible candidates who have not cleared NET examination. M.Phil. candidates and SET (State Level Eligibility Test) qualified candidates also have to appear for entrance test.

Temporary Teachers, Teachers working in Colleges / Universities and Scientists from National Laboratories with two years of service shall be admitted to Ph.D. programme on a part-time basis.

Teachers working in Polytechnic College / Recognized Schools and Employees working in Universities / Colleges / Government Sector / Public Sector Undertakings / National and International NGOs / Industries with five years of service shall be admitted to Ph.D. programme on a part-time basis.

The rules determining the eligibility for admission on a part-time basis shall be the same as those for full-time students.

If full-time research scholars of the Institute are appointed as faculty either within the Institute or elsewhere, they may convert their registration from full-time to part-time.

Project Fellow / Research fellows working in GRI in the projects sponsored by the UGC / CSIR / ICSSR / ICAR / DOE / DST / DBT / MOES / MOEN / MNRES and other national / international funding agencies and industries, candidates awarded with any other recognized fellowships and qualified technical staff working in projects with a duration of not less than two years shall also be eligible to register for Ph.D. under this category. Candidates belonging to the category of Project Associates / Project Fellow / Research Fellow / Foreign Nationals/ NRIs shall be allowed to register for the Ph.D. programme.

Inviting applications for admissions will be done online throughout the year subject to the availability of vacancies.

Admission of foreign nationals / NRI candidates on a part-time basis will be done through an online entrance test (Multiple Choice Question-Computer Based Test) and an interview subject to other terms and conditions as stipulated by the UGC/Government of India.

Foreign nationals / NRI candidates (Teaching/Non-Teaching) should have five years of work experience before seeking admission to Ph.D. programme at GRI.

No candidate from other states except North east, Kashmir, Ladakh, Andamans and Lakshadweep regions of India will be given online entrance option. However on exceptional circumstances online test for other candidates can be conducted at the discretion of the authorities. A separate fee will be collected for such online examination and online interview as prescribed by the institute.

A Common Entrance Test will be conducted through both online and offline by the Controller of Examinations for the eligible candidates as detailed below: This pattern is applicable for Indian, NRI and foreign students.

1) Duration: 1 hour
2) Type: Multiple Choice Questions
3) Marks: 50 (50×1)

Question paper pattern for Subject Test (Descriptive)
1) Duration: 1 hour
2) Distribution: 5 out of 7 questions
3) Marks: Each question carries 10 Marks (5×10)

Question papers for Research Aptitude Test (General) and Subject Test will be set and evaluated by a Board consisting of the Dean/HOD/Director and the Research Supervisors concerned.

There will be an Admission Committee consisting of the Dean/HOD/Director of the School/Department/Centre and the recognized supervisors of the School/Department/Centre. During the interview, the candidates shall present their research area/concept and a research supervisor will be allotted at the time of interview, if the candidate is selected for the Ph.D programme.
