Eligibility Criteria

Before filing an application, candidates are advised to ensure that they meet the eligibility criteria for GATE 2027.

Candidates who are currently studying in the 3rd or higher years of any undergraduate degree program or who have completed any government approved degree program in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Science / Commerce / Arts / Humanities are eligible to appear for GATE 2027.

Some Professional Societies*/Institutions, which conduct examination in various fields of engineering, are given below.

The Institution of Engineers (India) (IE)
The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)
The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE)
The Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI)
The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, including Polymer and Environmental Group (IIChE)
The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM)
The Indian Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIIE)

Candidates who possess certification from any such professional societies must ensure that those examinations are approved by MoE / AICTE / UGC / UPSC as being equivalent to B.E. / B.Tech. / B.Arch. / B.Planning, etc.

Candidates who have obtained/are pursuing their qualifying degree from countries other than India: Candidates must be currently in the 3rd or higher years or must have completed their Bachelor’s degree (of at least three years duration) in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Science / Commerce / Arts / Humanities.

Any candidate fulfilling the above-mentioned criteria is eligible to appear for GATE 2027.

Candidates pursuing any higher degree or in possession of a degree higher than that mentioned in the table below, will be allowed to appear for GATE 2027.

Candidates must familiarize themselves with the paper code as it is required both during application and examination.

Each candidate should fill only one application. If they wish to appear in a second paper (from the two-paper combination), they can add the respective paper in their original application. In case of multiple applications, only one will be accepted and remaining applications will be rejected without any refund for the paid fee.

Negative Marking	For a wrong answer chosen in an MCQ, there will be negative marking. For a 1-mark MCQ, 1/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer. *Following the O.M.F. No. P-13013/75/2023-Policy-DD-III dated August 01, 2025 , a PwD candidate, in the category of blindness, locomotor disability (both arms only) and cerebral palsy, can request for the compensatory time of one hour upon production of valid disability certificate/UDID card. In case of all other specified disabilities the compensatory time will be allowed on production of a certificate to the effect that the person concerned has a functional limitation to write, caused by the specified disability. Please refer to Appendix-B1 .

Note:

The test papers will be in English. Candidates opting to appear in TWO test papers must have a primary choice of test paper. The secondary test paper must be chosen from the allowed combinations given in the table above. Combinations other than the listed ones are NOT allowed in the initial (Regular and Extended) windows of registration. We may open up additional two-paper combinations at a later date, which will be notified on the GATE 2027 website. This is subject to the availability of infrastructure and scheduling feasibility.

The examination centre of a candidate for the secondary test paper may be different (but in the same city) from that for the primary paper due to infrastructure and scheduling constraints. GATE 2027 shall NOT be liable for any legal obligations arising out of this issue.

Under unforeseen circumstances, certain combinations may be removed from the list in the above table at a later date. In such cases, the fee paid towards the second test paper will be refunded to the candidates.

This is a tentative list of examination cities. Any changes will be updated on the website.

Choice of Examination City: A candidate can opt for SIX cities from the list given above. All the six options must be from the same GATE 2027 zone. GATE 2027 reserves the right to add a new city or remove an existing one, and allot a city that may not be from any of the options provided by the candidate.

Withdrawal of International Centres: GATE 2027 will be conducted only in centres within India. It will NOT be conducted in centres outside India. Foreign nationals and Indian citizens residing abroad may appear for GATE 2027, by paying the full application fee (₹2000 per test paper), but they must choose examination cities within India. They must make their own arrangements for travel and accommodation to appear for the exam at an assigned centre within India.
