Special cases

  • Students with exceptionally good performance in the National Olympiads in Mathematics, Physics and Informatics are exempted from writing the BS entrance examination.
  • For CMI's PhD programmes, you can also qualify for the interview by writing national level exams such as GATE, JEST, NBHM and UGC/CSIR NET. Specific details are given below for Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics.

Academic programmes offered at CMI
Admission will be made to the following programmes in 2026–27.
  • B.S. (Hons.) in Mathematics, Mathematics and Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics (4 year course).
    - For all of these 4 year programmes, there is an option to add a minor in Data Science.
    - There is a 3 year exit option leading to a B.Sc.
  • M.Sc. in Mathematics (2 year course).
  • M.Sc. in Computer Science (2 year course).
  • M.Sc. in Data Science (2 year course).
  • Ph.D. in Mathematics.
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science.
  • Ph.D. in Physics.
Note:
There is a common entrance examination for all B.S. (Hons.) programmes. You do not select your course at the time of applying. The choice is made after admission.

Eligibility for Admission
  • All B.S. (Hons.) programmes: 12th standard or equivalent.
  • M.Sc. in Mathematics: Undergraduate degree (B.A., B.Sc., B.E., B.Tech.....) with a strong background in mathematics.
  • M.Sc. in Computer Science: Undergraduate degree (B.A., B.Sc., B.E., B.Tech.....) with a strong background in computer science.
  • M.Sc. in Data Science: Undergraduate degree (B.A., B.Sc., B.E., B.Tech.....) with a background in mathematics / statistics / computer science.
  • Ph.D. in Mathematics: B.E. / B.Tech. / B.Sc. (Math) / M.Sc. (Math).
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science: B.E. / B.Tech. / M.Sc. / M.Tech. in computer science, mathematics or allied areas.
  • Ph.D. in Physics: M.Sc.(Physics).
How to Apply
For all programmes, applicants will have to take an entrance examination. The entrance exam for 2026-2027 will be conducted at the following locations.

Agartala, Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, Chennai, Cochin, Coimbatore, Durgapur, Goa, Gurgaon, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Indore, Jaipur, Kanpur, Kolkata, Madurai, Mohali, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Noida, Paschim Medinipur, Patna, Pune, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Silchar, Siliguri, Srinagar, Tiruchi, Trivandrum, Visakhapatnam.

Selection for all Ph.D. programmes will involve an interview for shortlisted candidates. For all other programmes, interviews will be at the discretion of the Admissions Committee—the Committee may call shortlisted candidates for an interview depending on their prior academic record.

Fees and scholarships

Direct admission to BS entrance examination
The following categories of students qualify for direct admission:
  • Students who have qualified for the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC) or European Girls Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (EGMOTC) in Class 11 or Class 12.
  • Students who have qualified for the Orientation Cum Selection Camp (OCSC) in Physics in Class 11 or Class 12.
  • Students who have qualified for the International Olympiad in Informatics Training Camp (IOITC), or have received a gold or silver medal at the Indian National Olympiad in Informatics (INOI) in Class 11 or Class 12.
To apply for admission through this route, please fill out the CMI Application Form in full detail and pay the application fee. After you fill out the form, please send an email to admissions@cmi.ac.in with your CMI application details and the category through which you qualify for direct admission. You will then receive a confirmation by email if you are exempted from writing the entrance exam.

Qualify for PhD Mathematics via NBHM
Candidates applying to the Ph.D. programme in Mathematics at CMI can qualify for the interview without writing the CMI entrance examination if they have been awarded the NBHM Ph.D. Fellowship.

If you wish to apply to the Ph.D. programme in Mathematics at CMI through this channel, you should fill out the CMI application form in full detail and pay the application fee. fter you fill out the form, send an email to phdmath2026@cmi.ac.in with your CMI application details, attaching a scanned copy of your NBHM scorecard along with your B.Sc. and M.Sc. academic transcripts.

Qualify for PhD Computer Science via GATE, JEST
Candidates applying to the PhD programme in Computer Science at CMI can qualify for the interview on the basis of their performance in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) in Computer Science and Information Technology, or the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) in Theoretical Computer Science, without writing the CMI entrance examination.

If you have a valid JEST or GATE score and wish to apply to the PhD programme in Computer Science at CMI, you should fill out the CMI application form in full detail and pay the application fee. After you fill out the form, send an email to phdcs2026@cmi.ac.in with your CMI application details and your JEST/GATE score.

If you qualify directly for the interview based on your performance in JEST or GATE, you will receive a notification from the Admissions Committee. If you do not hear from us, you must write the CMI entrance examination in order to qualify.

Qualify for PhD Physics via GATE, JEST, UGC-CSIR NET
Besides the CMI entrance examination, candidates applying to the PhD programme in Physics at CMI may also qualify for an interview based on their performance in the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) in Physics, UGC-CSIR NET, or GATE in Physics. They may be called for an interview at the discretion of the admissions committee and must have a valid score from the respective examinations at the time of the interview.

If you wish to apply to the PhD programme in Physics at CMI, you should fill out the CMI application form in full detail and pay the application fee. After you fill out the form, send an email to phdphy2026@cmi.ac.in with your CMI application details, attaching a scanned copy of the appropriate scorecard(s).

If you qualify for the interview based on your performance in any one of the qualifying exams, you will receive a notification from the Admissions Committee.

All entrance examinations will be conducted in a single session, starting at 14:00 and ending at either 17:00 or 17:30, depending on the exam.
  • You can apply to at most one of the three Ph.D. programmes: PhD Mathematics, Ph.D. Computer Science and Ph.D. Physics.
  • If you apply for Ph.D. Mathematics or Ph.D. Computer Science, you must write the entrance exam for that programme.
  • You cannot apply to any other programmes in combination with Ph.D. Physics.
  • You can apply for Ph.D. in Mathematics in combination with M.Sc. Mathematics. There is a common entrance exam for both categories. You cannot apply to any other programme in combination with Ph.D. Mathematics.
  • You can apply for Ph.D. in Computer Science in combination with M.Sc. Computer Science. There is a common entrance exam for both categories. You cannot apply to any other programme in combination with Ph.D. Computer Science.
  • You can apply to any combination of the three MSc programmes: M.Sc. Mathematics, M.Sc. Computer Science and M.Sc. Data Science.
    The combination that you can apply for depends on entrance examination that you have to chosen to write.
    - If you have selected the M.Sc. Mathematics entrance examination, you can apply to all three M.Sc. programmes.
    - If you have selected the M.Sc. Computer Science entrance examination, you can apply to MSc Computer Science and MSc Data Science, but not to MSc Mathmatics.
    - If you have selected the M.Sc. Data Science entrance examination, you can only apply to MSc Data Science.
    If you apply to multiple M.Sc. programmes, you will be short-listed based on your performance in the exam that you write and called for an interview for the other programmes.
  • For BS applications, the application fee is Rs. 1,100/-.
  • For M.Sc./Ph.D. applications, there are four categories of subjects
    - Category 1: M.Sc. and/or Ph.D. Mathematics
    - Category 2: M.Sc. and/or Ph.D. Computer Science
    - Category 3: M.Sc. Data Science
    - Category 4: Ph.D. Physics
    If you apply in a single category, the application fee is Rs. 1,100/-. If you apply in more than one category, the fee is Rs. 1,300/-. The exact fee payable will be displayed when you fill out the application form.
  • Application fees must be paid online. You will find a link after you fill in your details in the application form.
  • If you are unable to apply the application fee online, please write to admissions@cmi.ac.in with your Applicant ID explaining the circumstances.
  • Admit Cards will be available online after 25 April, 2026.
  • There is no photograph or signature required for the Admit Card. You will have to carry a print out of the Admit Card to the Test Centre along with a photo-identity card. The photo-identity card can be a government issued document like a passport, or an identity card, or a letter attested by your school/college/employer.
