Application for seeking admission to the Ph.D. Programme offered at the University Schools and Research Centres/Institutions affiliated to Goa University shall be accepted online from 09th April, 2026 to 21th April, 2026. The list of vacancies in the respective subjects, along with the names of the Research Supervisor and area of research and reservation are given at Annexure-I and Annexure-II respectively.

Admission to the Ph.D. Programme is governed by Ordinance OA-40 of this University which is available on the University website www.unigoa.ac.in. Interested candidates are required to refer to Ordinance OA-40.1 and this Notification for details including the eligibility criteria before applying.

Eligibility
    • A candidate who has obtained a 1-year/2-Semester Master's Degree Programme after a 4-year/8-Semester Bachelor’s Degree Programme or a 2-year/4-Semester Master’s Degree Programme after a 3-year Bachelor’s Degree Programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the Master’s Degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or an equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution.
      or
    • A candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-Semester Bachelor’s Degree Programme (Under NEP) should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed.
      or
    • Candidates who have completed the M.Phil. Programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in appoint scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. Programme.
  • A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade shall be given for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer [NCL])/Person with Disability (PwD), Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time shall be available for (a), (b) and (c) above.
  • The subject of research shall be that which relates to the main branch/branches of knowledge chosen by the candidate for the Post-Graduate Degree. However, a candidate wishing to conduct research in a subject of an interdisciplinary character shall also be eligible for registration. The applications of such candidates shall be considered by following the procedure set out under OA-40.2.
  • Ph.D. through Part-time Mode
    Ph.D. Programmes through part-time mode shall be permitted, provided all the conditions stipulated below are fulfilled. A candidate who is employed with any organization has to obtain a NOC from the appropriate authority in the organization where the candidate is employed “No Objection Certificate”, clearly stating that:
    • The candidate is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis.
    • Her/his official duties permit her/him to devote sufficient time to research.
    • If required, s/he will be relieved from the duty to complete the course work.
  • Admission to the Ph.D. Programmes for the April 2026 session is open to the following candidates.
      • Candidates who qualify for the fellowship/scholarship in UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET/GATE/CEED and similar National level tests or any other test notified by the UGC from time to time, shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. Programme based on an interview.
      • Candidates not falling under (I) above but have qualified NET/SET Lectureship shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. Programme based on an interview. There shall be 70% weightage for the score at the NET/SET and 30% weightage for the Interview.
      • Candidates not falling under (I and II) above shall have to answer the Entrance Test conducted at the University and those qualifying the test shall be eligible to attend the interview. There shall be 70% weightage for the score at Entrance Test and 30% weightage for the Interview.
      Candidates who have completed M. Phil Degree by distance mode are not eligible.
    • All the candidates who are qualified in the Goa University Ph.D. Entrance Test (GU-PET) conducted by this University held in the session of August 2024 and August 2025.
    • Senior Citizens who are otherwise qualified but exempted from appearing at the Ph.D. Entrance Test.

Documents to be upload at the time of submitting the Online Application.
  • Statement of Marks of Post-Graduation.
  • Certificate of Passing M.Phil. CSIR-UGC / UGC-NET-JRF / lectureship, DBT-JRF / SLET / JEST / ICAR-NET / NET / SET / GATE / GPAT / GU-PET and such examination approved as per the UGC guidelines.
  • Candidates applying for admission under the Reserved Categories shall be required to submit a valid Certificate to that effect issued by the Officer of the rank of the Deputy Collector or any other authorized Officer as notified by the Government of Goa.
  • Valid Category Certificate (if applicable); OBC (non-creamy layer) Certificate is valid for 3 years.
  • EWS Category candidates are required to submit a certificate issued to that effect by the Officer of the rank of the Mamlatdar or any other Authorized Officer as notified by the Government of Goa.

Applicants are eligible to apply for a maximum three Programmes.
Candidates are required to check/confirm the correctness of the information entered before paying and submitting their application. Application fees once paid shall not be refunded under any circumstances.
Selection Process
  • Candidates who qualify for the fellowship/scholarship in UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET/GATE/CEED/GPET and similar National level tests or any other test notified by the UGC from time to time, shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. Programme based on an interview.
  • Candidates not falling under (i) above but have qualified NET/SET/GU-PET score/GATE/CEED/GPET Lectureship shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. Programme based on an interview. There shall be 70% weightage for the score at the NET/SET/GU-PET and 30% weightage for the Interview.

    Note: For instance; if a student scores 120 marks in entrance test out of 200 marks and 50 marks in interview out 100 marks, as per the above criteria the final marks out of 100 will be 120/200 x 0.7 + 50/100 x 0.3 = 57 marks.
  • Senior Citizens who are otherwise qualified but exempted from appearing at the Ph.D. Entrance Test. Such candidates in the interview shall be eligible for admission based on an interview.
  • While grading the candidates for admission to Ph.D. Programme, the following shall be considered:
    a) Basic knowledge of the chosen field of study;
    b) Competence for the proposed research;
  • Candidates who have been selected for admission to the Ph.D. Programme shall be placed under "Category A". Candidates who have not been selected for admission to the Ph.D. Programme shall be placed under "Category B".
  • The Selection Committee may provide a list of additional candidates as waitlisted candidates against a recognized Research Supervisor along with the reservation category. These candidates shall be listed under Category "C" and which shall be valid only for that particular round of admissions.
  • In case of a tie in scores, preference shall be given to those who have been awarded JRF in the CSIR-UGC/UGC NET/GATE/CEED examination, followed by DST Inspire, M.Phil. degree holders, NET, SET candidate and GPAT over GU-PET qualified candidates in that order. If the tie still persists then interview performance will be used as a tiebreaker.
  • Every candidate shall have to reside within the territorial jurisdiction of Goa University during the first three years of the period of research leading to Ph.D. Degree.
