The Maharashtra government's State Council for Education, Research, and Training (SCERT) has proposed significant revisions to the curriculum for Classes 11 and 12. Notably, English would transition from a compulsory subject to an elective, categorized as a foreign language.
The proposed curriculum offers students greater flexibility in subject selection, comprising a total of eight subjects: two languages, four electives, and two mandatory subjects. This shift aims to move away from the traditional delineations of Arts, Commerce, and Science streams. The SCERT's language chart mandates the inclusion of at least one Indian language among the options, alongside 17 Indian languages and nine foreign languages, with English as the primary foreign language choice.
This alteration enables students to pursue a diverse array of subjects and languages, fostering a broader educational outlook. Additionally, the draft curriculum underscores interdisciplinary learning, with a focus on themes related to climate change and its ramifications.
Previously, English was compulsory from Classes 1 through 12. However, the new proposed framework for school education in Maharashtra, outlined by SCERT, is now open to input from all stakeholders.
