CBSE Directs Schools to Prioritise Mental Health and Extracurricular Growth

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), India’s national school board, has instructed its affiliated institutions to give increased importance to extracurricular activities and to periodically review examination systems. The goal is to ensure that students develop a well-rounded identity that extends beyond marks and class rankings.

In a recent circular, the board highlighted student mental health and overall well-being as central priorities. Schools have been advised to guide parents on avoiding excessive academic pressure, help them identify early signs of emotional distress, and encourage supportive responses at home.



This direction is significant because many families choose CBSE schools with the expectation that their children will focus heavily on academics and perform well in competitive entrance examinations after Class XII.


Focus on Extracurricular Development

Schools have been encouraged to actively promote sports, arts, and personality development programmes. The board has also recommended reviewing exam patterns periodically to prevent student growth from being measured solely through test scores.

Regular awareness programmes for parents on adolescent mental health have also been advised. Student orientation sessions and classroom activities are expected to incorporate emotional regulation, mental health awareness, life skills education, and information about available support systems.


Academic Pressure and Career Choices

Many students transfer to CBSE schools after Class X in hopes of improving their prospects in engineering and medical entrance examinations. As a result, other board-affiliated schools often see a migration of high-performing students at this stage.

In some cases, parents strongly encourage their children to opt for the science stream in Classes XI and XII, even when interests or aptitude may differ. School leaders note that academic stress increases when students pursue subjects that do not align with their strengths.

Educators emphasise that not every student is suited to careers in medicine or engineering. They advocate identifying individual talents—whether in arts, theatre, sports, or other disciplines—and nurturing those abilities.


Career Counselling and Staff Training

The board has recommended structured career counselling services for students and parents. These initiatives aim to reduce unrealistic expectations, increase awareness of diverse academic and professional pathways, and support informed, interest-based career decisions.

Additionally, both teaching and non-teaching staff are required to undergo training at least twice a year under certified mental health professionals. The training focuses on identifying warning signs of distress, responding appropriately to self-harm risks, and understanding referral mechanisms.

By encouraging holistic development and prioritising emotional well-being, CBSE seeks to create a more balanced and supportive educational environment for students.
