India’s national body responsible for school curriculum and textbooks, the NCERT, has suggested major changes to the syllabus for Class IX. According to a draft curriculum published online, students may study ten subjects instead of the current five.
At present, Class IX students study the following subjects:
The draft proposal recommends adding one more language and introducing four new subjects to create a broader learning experience.
Most of these subjects are expected to continue in Class X. However, the subject Individuals in Society may later be replaced with Environmental Education.
The changes are based on recommendations from the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023. The framework promotes skill development, practical learning, and a wider range of educational experiences for students.
New textbooks aligned with the updated syllabus are currently being prepared and may be released by the end of March.
Some school administrators believe the increase in subjects could add academic pressure for students. They also explained that schools cannot adopt the new curriculum until education boards such as CBSE formally approve and direct its implementation.
There are also concerns about the availability of teachers for the newly introduced subjects. Many educators believe that proper training and additional staff will be necessary for successful implementation.
Education specialists argue that adding subjects like vocational education, arts, and physical education can help students build practical skills and prepare them for future challenges. However, the effectiveness of the new curriculum will depend on adequate teacher training and school resources.
