Nearly two centuries after its establishment, Scottish Church College in Kolkata has initiated steps to secure autonomous status, aiming to function independently of the University of Calcutta. The institution’s governing council has approved a proposal to apply to the University Grants Commission (UGC) for academic autonomy.
College authorities believe that greater independence will enable the institution to redesign its curriculum, introduce forward-looking programmes, and respond more effectively to evolving educational and industry demands. Emerging fields such as artificial intelligence and data science are among the areas under consideration for expansion.
To oversee the transition process, a nine-member task force has been formed. The panel will receive advisory support from Father Dominic Savio, Principal of St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, which has operated as an autonomous institution since 2006.
Before submitting its formal application, the college has sought approval from its parent body, the Church of North India. Once internal clearances are completed, the proposal will be forwarded to the University of Calcutta with a copy to the UGC, and the state education department will also be notified.
Scottish Church College has consistently maintained strong academic credentials, earning an “A” grade in the last three assessment cycles conducted by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). In its most recent review, NAAC recommended that the institution consider applying for autonomy to enhance academic innovation.
The move reflects a broader trend among Kolkata-based colleges seeking academic flexibility to attract and retain talented students. With enrolment challenges emerging in certain departments, institutional leaders see autonomy as a strategic step toward long-term growth and relevance.
