The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has committed more than Rs. 1,600 crore toward a large-scale initiative to modernize nearly 430 schools across West Bengal. The total project outlay is Rs. 2,349.78 crore, with 70% financed by ADB and the remaining 30% contributed by the state government.
According to Education Minister Bratya Basu, the proposal has received in-principle approval from the state cabinet. The selected institutions will be transformed into model schools aimed at strengthening academic standards and improving overall learning environments.
Under the project titled “Enhancing School Education in West Bengal”, two schools will be upgraded in each of the 87 identified underdeveloped blocks, while one school will be selected from every other block.
The upgraded schools will feature smart classrooms, advanced laboratories, enhanced digital infrastructure, and improved sports facilities. Officials said the new infrastructure will also create better access and learning conditions for children with special needs.
Authorities believe that strengthening infrastructure is key to increasing enrolment rates and reducing school dropouts, particularly in economically disadvantaged regions.
The initiative is being positioned as a significant step toward long-term educational development, promoting technology integration and modern scientific learning methods across the state.
