Beginning in 2026, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will publish a provisional answer key soon after the civil services preliminary examination is conducted. This step follows a Supreme Court ruling and is aimed at improving transparency in the examination process.
The announcement was made in the Rajya Sabha, stating that candidates will be able to review tentative answers shortly after completing the prelims. The civil services exam is conducted annually in three stages—preliminary, mains, and interview—to recruit candidates for services such as IAS, IFS, and IPS.
The government clarified that while the provisional answer key will be made available soon after the exam, the marks for the preliminary stage will only be released after the final results are declared. This means candidates can verify answers early but must wait until the end of the selection process to know their scores.
To ensure fairness, UPSC applies moderation techniques across different subjects so that candidates opting for various optional papers are evaluated on an equal footing. Detailed information about the assessment and standardisation process is available on the official UPSC website.
The Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) is a qualifying paper designed to assess basic analytical ability. Its difficulty level corresponds to secondary school standards.
From 2026 onwards, candidates will be able to raise objections or report discrepancies through the Question Paper Representation Portal (QPRep). Additionally, grievances can also be submitted via CPGRAMS or email, providing multiple channels for feedback.
Overall, the early release of answer keys along with improved grievance mechanisms is expected to make the examination process more transparent and responsive.
