The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Lucknow has unveiled three new academic programmes centred on Artificial Intelligence, including an undergraduate degree that will admit students via JEE Advanced. This marks a significant shift in how management institutions are approaching technology-driven education in India.

The announcement was made by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan at the Bharat Bodhan AI Conclave 2026. The initiative reflects the institute’s plan to integrate artificial intelligence into management studies and leadership development.

Undergraduate AI Degree to Admit Students Through JEE Advanced

One of the newly introduced programmes is a four-year Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Business Analytics, scheduled to begin in the 2026–27 academic year. Admission to this course will be conducted through JEE Advanced, making it the first time an IIM has adopted this highly competitive engineering entrance exam for an undergraduate programme.

Alongside this degree, the institute plans to introduce a two-year Tech MBA starting in 2027–28. It will also offer a five-year integrated pathway combining the BS and Tech MBA, allowing eligible students to complete both qualifications in a streamlined format.

According to the institute, the curriculum is designed to prepare students for data-driven decision-making, digital innovation, and the strategic application of AI in business environments.

Focus on Responsible and Human-Centred AI

Speaking at the event, the Education Minister highlighted the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in shaping India’s future growth. He underscored the importance of positioning the country as a leader in developing AI systems that are ethical, inclusive, and aligned with human values.

He noted that management institutions have a crucial role in incorporating AI into strategic thinking, innovation frameworks, and practical problem-solving. He also stressed that technological progress should contribute positively to society.

Referring to India’s large youth population, he pointed out that the country has a strong foundation for building home-grown AI capabilities. He suggested that AI development should support not only economic growth but also improvements in sectors such as healthcare, education, and public administration.

Integrating Technology and Management Education

IIM Lucknow Director Professor MP Gupta described the new programmes as an effort to combine technological expertise with managerial knowledge. He explained that the modular structure of the courses aims to help students convert advanced AI concepts into scalable and commercially viable applications.

The initiative aligns with the national vision of Viksit Bharat@2047 and supports broader government efforts such as Digital India and the IndiaAI Mission. By introducing AI-focused degrees, the institute intends to strengthen India’s role in the global knowledge economy while ensuring that innovation remains socially relevant.

The inclusion of JEE Advanced as an entry route for the undergraduate AI programme signals an evolving higher education landscape, where technical excellence and management training are increasingly interconnected.
