Scottish Church College has taken a significant step towards securing autonomous status after receiving a No Objection Certificate (NoC) from the University of Calcutta. The approval allows the institution to continue its application with the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The college submitted its proposal for autonomy to the UGC in May while simultaneously requesting the mandatory NoC from the university. The university issued the clearance in June, enabling the application process to move ahead.
Principal Madhumanjari Mandal stated that the university has provided the required support throughout the process. She noted that the only pending document for submission to the UGC is the fire safety certificate, which is currently being obtained.
To secure the fire safety clearance, the nearly 200-year-old institution must submit an approved building plan. The required documentation is presently being prepared.
The college's pursuit of autonomous status follows a recommendation made by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) during its accreditation visit in 2022.
After receiving autonomy, Scottish Church College plans to expand its academic portfolio by introducing new programmes in sociology, statistics, and psychology. It also intends to offer courses in emerging disciplines such as artificial intelligence (AI) and data science. These programmes are expected to be conducted from the institution's second campus located in the Ogilvie building.
Meanwhile, Loreto College has also submitted its application for autonomous status and is currently awaiting approval from the University Grants Commission.
