The Bihar government has drafted a proposal to increase the monthly scholarship for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) students staying in Dr Ambedkar Welfare Hostels, potentially benefiting thousands across the state.
In a step aimed at easing financial pressure, the state is planning to raise the stipend for these students from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 2,000 per month.
The proposal has been prepared by the Department of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Welfare and is expected to be placed before the State Cabinet soon. Once approved, the revised amount will be implemented across Bihar.
The suggested increase is intended to help students handle daily expenses more comfortably and continue their education without added financial strain.
Officials noted that this move is part of a broader effort to support students from underprivileged backgrounds. While similar increases have been introduced earlier for students in government schools, this proposal focuses specifically on those living in welfare hostels, many of whom rely heavily on such assistance.
If approved, the higher stipend is expected to reduce financial difficulties faced by students studying away from home.
The plan is likely to impact nearly 10,000 students residing in 139 Dr Ambedkar Welfare Hostels across the state.
These hostels offer not only accommodation but also academic facilities such as digital classrooms and libraries, along with financial support. Students also receive 15 kilograms of food grains every month, including rice and wheat.
The proposed increase in scholarship is expected to further strengthen this support system and help students manage their everyday needs more effectively.
The proposal is currently awaiting Cabinet approval, after which a final decision will be taken.
